Is calling someone “Chief” derogatory?

  1. If you are adressing a first nations person, everyone else is fair game in my opinion?,…why?

  2. I agree with Gustov. I call my boss Chief all the time. However to call a First Nations person “chief” could be considered derogatory.

  3. It’s perceived as derogatory if you say it to a First Nation/Aboriginal. And its not the smartest idea to say it to them either.

    I like being called ‘Pharaoh’ myself.

  4. Jeeze, the guys at work call me Chief and Coach all the time and I kinda take it as a compliment, even though I’m not their boss. Might be because I’m the oldest employee there. I like it better than Big Mama, fer sure.

  5. may not be derogatory, however i doubt very many first nation individuals would appreciate it. unless of course they happen to be the big cheese at a fire station.
