WHAT IS ELITISM?
Good evening from Montreal. Montrealman read the Bitcher’s Bitch and the comments following with consuming interest. A fascinating topic, as he is sure you will agree. However, if Montrealman were asked: “Are there difficulties with the Bitcher’s analysis of elitism?” Montrealman would reply, “Does the Pope live in Rome?” The first and principal difficulty is, of course, with the Bitcher’s concept of “elitism” itself.
Note the ending “ism.” This means that “elitism” is not something found in the natural world like a tree or a cloud but rather it is an ideology. It is an agenda. But what kind of ideology or agenda IS “elitism.”
The dictionary (The Concise Oxford) defines “elite” as “the choice part, the best.” There is an undeniable obviousness about the assertion. Some are the “choice part,” some are “the best.” Others are not. Was Bach a better composer than the rest? No question. Was Michelangelo a better painter? Come on.
But “elitism” must be seen for what it is, a cry of the intellectually dispossessed in the face of those who, by all objective standards, are their superior. Elitism, in other words, is the hoarse insistence, in spite of all evidence to the contrary, that we are all equal, that we all possess all talents to an equal degree. This, obviously, is patently false. So the concept of “elitism” is itself deeply flawed. This is borne out in the Bitcher’s line of reasoning.
The Bitcher, by a series of disconnected assertions, comes to what is clearly an untenable conclusion, that the “Elitist,” whomever he may be, is “ridiculous” as a consequence of his elitism. But, in addition to the fact that his concept of elitism is incoherent the Bitcher, unsuprisingly, does not realize that those who are above him are not ridiculous as he supposes. Rather – is this not obvious? – it is his perception that he is their equal which is ridiculous. But the Bitcher has no other recourse than ridicule, certainly not intelligence. At length, the Bitcher must realize his place in the scheme of things and his place, clearly, is not among the elite, those whom he ineffectually derides as “ridiculous.” His place is below them.
