Could someone please explain to me how the word “like” has gotten so friggin’ abused as a filler during conversation? Riding the #52 home the other night, without my MP3, I happened to listen to a loud conversation between two 20 something ladies, and overcome by boredom, started counting the number of times this word was abused. In the span of 15 minutes, 276 times! WTF?! Someone please help me understand why the person doesn’t understand their flagrant abuse of this word, and how totally annoying it is to listen to! Like, you know, like, I think like I might explode like if I hear that again! Like!!! —Smiley

  1. Dependence on hand-held information technology had substantially decreased the organic memory capacity of the adolescent brain. Punctuation might as well be quantum physics; and the finite number of comprehended words tend to serve multiple purposes.

My personal favorite is “You know what I’m saying?” (Pr. Ynowhamsayn) also known as – The Ebonic comma.

  2. I once counted the amount of times my teacher filled a sentence with “okay?”. When you focus on it, it only exists more. It’ll drive you crazy. Instead of hating that others say it a lot, just love that you say it very little.

  3. If memory serves me correctly, it began in the 80’s. It started in LA as Valley Girl speak, and then a song popularized it and it caught on everywhere. Why? Who knows? Someone obviously thought it sounded cool at the time.

  4. I still want to understand what “fly like a G6” means.

In all seriousness, “like” was the most common word in conversation when I was in high school… I think most people grow out of it and learn to use more descriptive words later in life.

  5. When I first moved to NS the word Sum was used like crazy…everything was “sum good”…that was “sum fun”…in Ontario they use the word eh a lot more than any of us here. I like to say eh….I don’t care if I sound like a crazy Canadian.
….since were talking about words we hate…I hate when people call other people Dog’s…like Randy Jackson on AI…that drives me mad!!! I won’t even watch the show.

  6. Ebonic coma?

OB, in the 80s, when I was in high school, we had girls from Waverley who talked like Moon Unit Zappa in her dad’s song. It was annoying then, it is now.
Just stupid speech patterns is all.
People generally grow out of it.
(says the guy who buttons every sentence with the word “dude”)

  7. The G6 is an airplane. Also known as the G650.

“G6” is also a dietary supplement for obese people.
The G6 Fat Incinerating Matrix. Fat loss you can feel!

  8. It’s a filler word OP. Don’t be so quick to judge, every does it at some point in their lives. Mostly when they are younger but many when they are older too especially if they haven’t done much public speaking.

If it’s not ‘like’ you’re using to fill in the gaps in your speech (allowing you time to think about what you’re going to say next), it’s ‘um’ or ‘ah’. I think about half of all university professors I’ve had have had a problem with using too many filler words in their lectures, just as bad if not worse than some randoms on the bus I’ve heard.

Not even just that but comfort words too, words that people say at the beginning and end of sentences because they are uncomfortable with just starting or ending a sentence on it’s own. alair mentioned ‘okay’ but there’s also ‘alright’, ‘right’, ‘so’, ‘mmkay’, ‘well then’, and the most annoying one my grade 12 math teacher was particularly fond of ‘alrighty then’.

‘like’ is more annoying because it’s an actual word that has a meaning (as opposed to the sounds of ‘um’ and ‘ah’) so you notice it more.

Also, it’s attached to the ‘stupid young female’ stereotype. As soon as anyone hears a young female abuse the word ‘like’ in a sentence even if it’s just once, she’s automatically judged as a ditz by everyone in earshot. While you’re less sensitive to the flaws in the speech of a university professor because, they’re a freaking university professor so you prejudge them as smart even before they open their mouths. Even though I personally find it more annoying when a prof can’t speak without interrupting themselves every few words because I’m paying good money for the course and I expect the speaker to be competent enough to do their job.

Have some patience OP, it’s freaking annoying I know, but this person could be still learning how to speak, just like you are conscience or it or not, and most of the rest of the human race. It sounds dumb, but almost all adults are shitty at it and still learning (the filler word habit is one that is particularly hard to kick because you don’t notice yourself doing it). Or maybe she’s an amazing speaker but just doesn’t give a shit about having perfect speech on the bus talking to a friend when she isn’t expected to impress anyone. Kind of like how I feel about grammar and proper sentence structure right now as I write a dinky little comment on an online thread as opposed to how I feel about all that stuff while writing my thesis.

Or just, you know, disregard everything I’ve said and turn the volume up on your MP3 player next time.

  9. Like really. Like you really like spent like all that like time like counting like the like number of like times someone like said like the word like like. Like wow like you have like no like fiucking like llife. Like what I like am like digging like.

  10. One of the things I do at my work is transcribe things, like meetings and interviews. I CANNOT stand “you know”. This one person actually used it EIGHT times in one sentence. Like, you know, it’s really …. you know, it’s you know hard to read and you know you totally loose the … you know, the meaning. But I guess that’s how people talk. Sigh. Back to work 🙁

  11. like jesus o.p., like what did you like expect, from like today’s kids? like they can’t string like 2 words together like and get a like verbal like sentence thing.
like i used to like laugh at all these like douches, til like i like saw that like they have like no fucking brains.
doesn’t all this like drive you like crazy trying to like read this, and think like how it like sounds when like said aloud like.but yeah, i know the feeling, like one time someone wanted to axe me a question,”axe” me a question, what the fuck is that. you wanna cut a question in two, or you wanna be serious and tell me what the fuck you want. either or other, is a complete waste of human brain power. and then we have those idiot texters all day, their little fingers going helter skelter on their tiny little keyboards. can’t you wait til you see the person, and you know like talk words in english or whatever you speak, to each other?
this shit is like giving me a fucking like headache.

  12. I enjoying sayin’ the term like. Especially in summer when my nails are painted pastel pink, in a floral romper and some white heart shaped sunnies. It completes the look ya know.
    No hateration.

    “The Ebonic comma” … …

  13. the quantity and repetitiveness of the filler words usually give me the indication of how much stock I can put in what the person is saying…

  14. Try just replacing the word ‘like’ with a word that in the context of their conversation would make it funny. For example
I prefer to replace the word ‘kill’ with the word ‘fuck’.
So ,the phrase “we’re gonna’ to kill you sheriff, but … “
Becomes ” We’re gonna fuck you sheriff, but we’re gonna fuck ya slow see. Then we’re gonna ride into tombstone & fuck everyone we see “

ANyway, what i’m trying to say is mellow out …life’s too short

  15. 52 without an ipod?

    …you poor poor soul.

    I’m not being sarcastic, either.

I like to deny the existence of that bus…*twitch*

  16. I like the 52…
it’s the equivalent of standing next to the ugly friend you ladies always bring along to the bar… always makes you look better.

I mean really, what do you expect from a bus that picks up people from Fairview AND highfield park… skeezy.
