One of our biggest HRM institutions constantly advertises positions, but they seem to be the same ones time after time, term positions. I have the experience and skills, but perhaps ageism is alive and well since I never get a call, nor the courtesy of any kind of human interaction. What is their HR office for? The ‘human’ element must be silent.

  1. HR is obliged to post the jobs to the general public, but most often the job is filled by someone already within the organization. That’s how most companies operate.

  2. Yeah this is true. If you can get your foot in the door – like in a temp job – it makes it easier to get in because you can get jobs posted internally. But for purposes of transparency – so it doesn’t look like all they do is hire their brothers, cousins, uncles or whatnot – they also post them online. That way if no one qualified posts inside they’ll take outside applications, but priority is always given to internal.

  3. Let’s be clear, HR is obliged to post in certain organizations, usually government. If this is a government role, there is a reason why you are not hearing back; there are probably 20-50 other people who meet ALL the essential requirements of the role. They will only contact those who meet all the listed requirements. Expand your search beyond government.

  4. they are just doing what the law says they have to do. whether job is taken internally or not, they have to pit ads up for it.

  5. I have worked in a local hospital for years, and the key word here is nepotism.
    The last 15 hirings in my work area were “all” family members of others who have worked at the hospital.
    Many of these family members start off with a piss-poor attitude.
    “I” won’t get in any trouble ’cause my daddy (or mommy) is so and so.
    Everyone pays through their taxes to run these places…but only a select few insiders get the jobs.
    Unfortunately HR has let things denigrate to a point where one has to question whether it’s a workplace or a daycare for the boss’ buddies kids.
    Postings (mostly) in these types of places is just a formality

  6. Thanks for the comments – I understand nepotism, but I’m also sure there must be some kind of padded office staff who supposedly ensure equity in hiring. That’s also the point of my note. When the library is asking for grade X, there is something wrong with the system, which should be touting education, not squishing it.

    When I was a ‘big shot’ out west, in a large post-2ndary school, I hired a lot from outside. Good job descriptions will self-select for quality, and good internals will win. But bad internals did not win when I was the chair.
