What About Bob?

Do your best Dylan; win internet fame and notoriety

Pete Freckelton originally got into Bob Dylan out of desperation. “I was a Canadian child of the ‘80s,” says the Port Williams programmer. “What were my options? There was Madonna and Glass Tiger. I started getting into heavy metal—Ozzy Osbourne singing about addiction, Metallica singing about social injustice. I got into Dylan through metal because it seemed like he had something to say, too—and I’ve been a sucker for him ever since.”

Freckelton’s interest blossomed into dylanradio.com: a non-profit streaming webcast that plays interviews and music by or inspired by Dylan. The site has since attracted over 3,000 users, and Freckelton was taken aback. “I love Bob but I can’t imagine listening to nothing but Bob Dylan all the time,” he says. “I guess the coolest thing about Dylan is that he constantly re-arranges his own songs when he plays them live, and so you end up with a library that’s really vast. No two songs are alike.”

Currently the site is hosting the Dylanradio Battle of the Bands—a contest where bands all over the world are invited to submit their versions of Bob Dylan songs. Last year entries ran the gamut, and included submissions by two Japanese schoolgirls who called themselves The Duet and did a spirited a capella cover of “Stuck Inside Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again.” The winners—based on a voting system—were an Italian group called The Maggie’s Farm Southern Band. “They sounded like Bob Dylan if he had an Italian accent,” Freckelton says.

You can browse last year’s winners on the site and Freckelton encourages more Canadian entries: “We didn’t have many last year,” he says. (Deadline for submission is April 30th.)

Below, check out a video of Maggie's Farm Southern Band taking on "Leopard-Skin Pill-box Hat."

And by "uphold some standards of civility" you mean screen comments, censor free speech out, and only allow opinions which directly reflect those of the moderator? No thank you, I'll keep this site the way it is and stay the hell away from yours, thanks.

DylanRadio is a delight for Dylan fans.
My hat is off to Mr. Freckelton.

It would be nice if this site would uphold some standards of civility like many sites do.

I think they are all whiney bitches. Dylan isn't even very good. And is that guy's name seriously Freckelton? I'm calling my parents later and thanking them for birthing me with a normal fucking surname.

One item to note, though. "Note the foul way you addressed me. I rest my case." You probably shouldn't rest your case when you haven't proven any point.

to shittydaisy. You all know damn well that I got banned cos I said " some idiots complained about us". Idiot is one of Bobs best words. How many times does he say it in Idiot wind. Oh yeah, I disagreed with Edie that Bob is a druggie wife beater too. I did not insult her, just disagreed.
Steve The Face. I was your first friend at the station. I told everyone to Listen to New Fools. DH didnt even want to listen, I had to tell her about 5 times. I did not say a wrong word to anyone until after I was banned, but the joke was on me, there was no one there even left to bluff. My best friends turned on me and started kissing Frekeltons ass.
The day he banned me everyone of my friends put on a ded to Pete saying how wonderful he is. Well you can all shove it. I at least saw who my friends are. Greg came to my new site hangout pretending to be 5 other people saying very disgusting stuff. Wonder what I ever did to him! You deserve each other. I took ITunes and recorded tons of music. I dont need backstabbers and butt lickers as friends.

Your comments here illustrate clearly why you were banned. Disruptiveness and rudeness and character assassination get plenty of people banned on plenty of sites. Come out of your sandbox and join the adult world.

All rated listeners from Dylan Radio do support the new battle 2010 ! The only right way to support a good organisation is to think WITH the system and keep on supporting, even in hard times. The battle 2009 made lots of friends between musicians worldwide and Dylan fans on both sides of the ocean. We rather put our energie in inviting new (young)Dylan cover performers to the battle and support those who want to bring a great tribute to Dylans work. Positive thinking deserves support , all the rest is out of the question.

Freckelton, she is NOT a stalker. She came here because I sent her the link. Neither of us care at all about you any more. But we hate the way you are cashing in on Bob's name. And your childish "if you don't let me win you can't play" attitude. Here is my comment: Freckelton is a lot of BS. If he doesn't like you, he takes your IP and blocks you from his site or even from streaming the station to your computer. I know, because it happened to me and a friend (2 devoted Dylan fans). Read the Forums on the site from about a year ago. The Highlights should have been the winners of last year's BOTB.

Having a stalker isn't nearly as interesting as it sounds.

from Madonna to Dylan. LOL....Oszzy...LOL. I think he is secretly still into them and is only making money out of Dylan

if the station is non profit, why is he constantly begging for donations. I was banned and unable to even listen to the stream because I disagreed with some horrid stuff said about Bob. My friend and I who are both avid (true) Dylan lovers were banned because we disagreed with someone who said that Boots of Spanish Leather makes her vomit. Frekelton said he detested the karaoke Chritmas in the Heart album, which in my opinion is wonderful. Frekelton is a phoney, and is making a good profit out of Dylan through playing illegal bootlegs. He should give half the money he collects to Bob.
