Established in the minds of Coast readers as a stellar student hang-out, it’s also now known as the place where you can bring your guitar, your keys, your talent, your ambition to be a stah, whatever and maybe win some cash. It starts at 9pm, but it’s a good idea to get in early as […]
The Company House
Eeny, meeny, miny, Pop
Three days left. Fifteen venues. A shitton of bands. The sum: too many choices to be made in the next 72 hours. If spontaneity’s your thing, tuck this geographical list of bar-only Halifax Pop Explosion venues (there are nine) in your pocket today, so that when you—or someone you know—-inevitably arrives at the Paragon at […]
The Royal treatment
If my camera’s USB cord worked, you’d have a live photo. But hey, he’s still damn handsome. OK, maybe not the pants right off—-he is married to lovely lady Sarah Slean, after all—-but last night’s show left nobody wanting. In a cheeky mood, Royal Wood started his set with the new single “On Top of Your Love,” from his latest album The Waiting, telling the audience that he “made a racy, probably politically incorrect video” that he doesn’t plan on showing his wife. The track’s meant to be a bit rockier than Wood—-on his gorgeous, stage-hogging piano—-and supporting man Joel
On the Fringe
The Fringe Festival descends this week, and while the plays you choose to see can be a coin’s toss away from confusing or brilliant there’s no need to take chances with your meal and drink choices. Keep yourself well-fed by checking out one of these four places, all surrounding the festival’s venues. –Holly Gordon The […]

Carmel Mikol CD release
Folk songbird Carmel Mikol holds two homes in her heart. “I’m kind of a half-and-half, but to me Cape Breton is my absolute—I come here and it’s my home, and I can completely relax,” she says. “Halifax is where I have fun and do more of the business side of music…but Cape Breton’s kind of […]
In Good Company
Scott BlackburnPeachy keen. It’s been a good couple of weeks for the Company House. Fresh off an ECMA nod for Venue of the Year and co-owner Heather Gibson’s win for Manager of the Year, the warm, cozy Gottingen joint has also begun hosting an Artist in Residence program. Co-owner MaryAnn Daye likens the program to similar initiatives at the Cameron House in Toronto, where musicians get the chance to “present new music, fine tune older pieces and hone their performance skills in a live environment.” Natasha Peach will be assuming the role every second Monday for the next few months,
Melissa McClelland enchants IDOW festival
Melissa McClelland “I’ve never played in a church,” says Carmen Townsend, with her bright red shaggy bangs falling in her face. The Cape Bretoner is all charm. Her vocal play is reminiscent of Rebekah Higgs meets Jenn Grant, but her sound is entirely her own. Townsend takes listeners on a journey through the tumbling acrobats […]
Good Lovelies and Rose Cousins warm hearts at IDOW
Natasha Peach In the Dead of Winter may be in its fifth year, but it hasn’t strayed far from the original vision once held in the legendary Khyber Club. As a Halifax-based festival, IDOW’s mission is to showcase up and coming local artists. Natasha Peach is merely one of the many songwriters featured this year. […]
Pedal to the mellow
Gus’ Pub & Grill “Whenever we have big metal shows, we order extra Olands,” says Jake Cuming, a bartender at Gus’. He stresses Olands, Olands, and more Olands. Plus cheap draughts. And whiskey shots—“The hard stuff.” 2605 Agricola Street, 423-7786 The Company House CoHo owner Mary Ann Daye suggests a bit of the hard stuff […]
In the Dead of Winter Celebrates Fifth Anniversary
Musical matrimony Luke and Melissa As I wandered down the balmy streets of Halifax this afternoon to I bumped into Tim Crabtree, mastermind behind Paper Beat Scissors, who was heading home for a bite to eat before his show later at the Bus Stop Theatre. We stopped and chatted, noting the unusually warm winter’s day […]
The Company House: A year in the life
Tuesday, January 27, 2009 was a hectic one for MaryAnn Daye and Heather Gibson. The folk music festival In The Dead of Winter was about to open that evening at their new bar The Company House (2202 Gottingen Street, 404-3050) and they spent the morning securing their liquor licence and the afternoon securing booze. “It […]
