You better bow down to these kings—they’re using their royalty for good. Oz (Mr. Gay Halifax III) is the brains behind the Drag ‘n’ Shag, an event gathering the best of the city’s drag kings and genderbenders to take the stage and raise awareness and funds for the local trans community. All proceeds from the […]
Reflections Cabaret
Splice moves
Splice (444-4225) formerly at 1668 Barrington, is relocating to 5158 Sackville, under Newcombe’s Ink and across from Reflections, as of today, March 1. “We’ve been on the same block for six years…but we figured it was best to get to ground level because we want greater visibility for our new retail section that’ll open in […]
Best Party Venue
First Runner-up: Taboo Nightclub Second Runner-up Pacifico
Best Pick-up Bar
The Dome takes back an award from Reflections, which took this one in the last Best of Halifax. Apparently Haligonians in the know now prefer to go to the labyrinthine caverns of The Dome to get lucky. Is it the ambiance of the Sky Bar, the bar shot specials, the close quarters, the stellar light […]
Best Gay Bar
Reflections continues to dominate multiple categories, offering a special oasis in Halifax’s club zone, a place where whatever your special freak might be, so long as you remain tolerant of others’, you can wave your flag high. With regular DJ nights, live music on Mondays ($Rockin 4 Dollar$) and frequent theme music nights (heavy metal […]
Finally, A Joan Jett Tribute Night
a-guh guh guh guh guh guh The Coast’s favorite rock heroine with a bad reputation will get her due at Reflections this Saturday. Craig Hamlin, Matt Grace, Ben Manuel and Myles Deck form The Blackhearts while the sultry-voiced Chantal Caissie (of Audrey and the Agents) will don Joan’s leather pants. “I’ve always really liked what […]
Party like it’s Pride Week
If you haven’t noticed, you might be blind—Halifax Pride week is in full swing, and this weekend brings the always-anticipated parade and closing parties. While you’re waiting for the ass-less chaps dude to swagger your way with Saturday’s floats, take a peek at some of these venues that are hosting parties through to Sunday. The […]
Shakedown Combo’s rockabilly genes
Davey Lee Goode reveals a surprise over the phone. Asked how the members of his band, The Shakedown Combo, met, he chuckles. “That’s kind of a closely guarded secret: We’re a family.” It’s tough to figure that out from their website, but Gill Goode, vocalist (pictured), and Davey, guitarist, are married, and they moved to […]
Cover Me Badd
As most of you well know, cover songs are tricky beasts. A bad cover can permanently derail a career (see Madonna’s version of “American Pie” or a recurring nightmare I have called “Puff Daddy, Come with Me.”) But sometimes what begins as a fanboy/fangirl trifle can sometimes evolve into a moment of career-defining genius. I […]
Videogameramma night with Nerd Army
Remember when The Wizard‘s Super Mario Bros. 3 finale had everyone reaching for a Nintendo controller and wishing they, too, could enter a speed round and star in a Fred Savage flick? For five bucks this Saturday, the Second Last Gamestore and Reflections are bringing you that childhood dream. Gamers in the city need to […]
Saturday Sloppies at Reflections
Everyone, I’ve got an announcement: I’m PREGNANT. Reflections has become our new favorite Saturday pre-drinking joint now that the bar has introduced early shows beginning at 9pm. Last week we swilled $3 bottles of Olands to the sounds of the eternally youthful The Whiskey Kisses and the exuberantly cuss-y Whiskey Bent and Hellbound. Plus, two words: Hee-Haw burlesque. Then we went to a house party and got all stupid to Jimmy Cliff, in that perfect mid-buzz phase where you’re kind of silly but not yet sloppy and feeling tomorrow’s regret. A perfect evening. This week, The Visitation takes the stage
