From this Wednesday until this Sunday, the city of MontrĂ©al will be “fire,” as they say. The kids say that. Dozens of music’s ‘coolest’ acts (Thurston Moore, for one, and Motörhead, for some reason) will take over the land of smoked meat sandies and cheap gross ’40s for Pop Montreal. I wish I could go but alas. Luckily The […]
Quaker Parents
Special Noise returns
Special Noise is back! The darlings of 2005 are back to lay down some rock solid bright sounds and drum inspiration at Michael’s Bar and Grill July 21 (10pm, $6) before heading to Evolve. With Quaker Parents (back from a tour, and you all know what they say about bands back from tour—they’re usually very […]
Sled Island round up
Wednesday: Bloodhouse at the Royal Canadian Legion (Upstairs) Raw dog rock gods Bloodhouse are the first band of my official Sled Island 2012 experience. The audience at the legion waded through the swampy riffs and swirling delay as Bloodhouse cut loose on them. Some other bands played that I didn’t really pay attention to because […]
HPX 2011: Thursday
I’m exhausted today and will try to keep it short. Went to a new Russian place for breakfast and someone from my party ordered borscht for breakfast, and I found this totally disgusting. And oh hey look, it’s Quaker Parents and Bloodhouse at the Coast HPX party. If you missed this, you missed free beers […]

Sappyfest 2011, Day 3:
As the final day of this little festival commences, people recede into the shade under the only tree near the Town Bandstand where Toronto’s Lisa Bolzikovic begins quietly. The sky is intensely blue and the shade offers very little respite from the scorching sun. After a few sullen numbers unaccompanied, Bozikovic is backed by three […]
Get Ready for Sappy
I got back from Evolve yesterday and I’m still picking out gnarly clumps of festival from my hair and playing catchup on everything I missed. Festival updates coming around lunch! Hold onto your butts! In the meantime, for those of you going to Sappyfest this weekend, you can see two local bands on the bill […]
Friday Night Lives at Gus’
I write this to you from wedding central in Toronto, wearing last night’s dress and drinking a lot of water. If I was in Halifax tonight I would be cleaning myself up in preparedness for a rather ripping show tonight at Gus’ featuring Scribbler and friends Mess Folk, Omma Cobba and the always-perfect Quaker Parents […]

Quaker Parents and Dream Friends tapestravaganza
[image-1] Remember cassettes? Well, better dig out your boomboxes because Quaker Parents and Dream Friends are having a split-tape release show this Friday. Special guests Long Weekends will also be joining the party. The split will be called Tap Turns Off/Dream Girls, and will feature nine new tracks. Five mathy and sure-to-be catchy indie rock tunes are coming from Quaker Parents (Tap Turns Off) and their pals Dream Friends (Dream Girls) will supply the other four tracks. So, why tapes? Mark Grundy of Quaker Parents says the manufacturing process is a lot faster when it’s left up to the musicians.
