Sappyfest Number Seven
This weekend, car loads of compatriots, wagons of wonderful merchants, vans full of families and campers full of campers made their way to Sackville, New Brunswick to take part in the seventh annual Sappyfest: an independent music festival that takes place over three days in the heart of the heart of the heart of the […]
I Love You, Shotgun Jimmie
Here’s a secret – I don’t really like music videos, in the traditional sense. I’m usually of the view that unless Chris Cunningham has directed it, it’s boring. But sometimes a video comes along that ideally reflects the personality of the musician, their general vibe, and kind of alludes to the meaning of the song […]
Sappyfest 2011, Day 1:
I arrived in Sackville around 5:30pm; The highway was full of cars, and we spot a few familiar faces along the way and one back window sign proclaiming ‘Sappy-Dappy-Doo!’). With just enough time to head to the local liquor shop and to direct a few fellow passengers to a vacant lot to set up a […]
Julie Doiron at the Seahorse, January 28

Last night, the North Street Church was even hotter. The church was like an iron lung: as soon as a […]
Rick White’s noise
When Rick White steps onto a stage, the first thing you notice is his guitar. It’s a well-worn acoustic with a cosmic scene adorning its body—acrylic paint swirls from the sound hole, spreading brilliantly outward. As White and his guitar settle into a chair at the main tent before his suppertime set at this year’s […]
Sappyfest Day Three
Sunday at Sappy had a slow start, we were pretty partied out after Saturday’s hijinx. I was pretty impressed when we spotted a group of musicians and volunteers playing baseball at 10:30; we thought about stopping by and hitting some dingers but we decided to skip out on the action and head to the performers’ brunch. No other festival treats musicians as well Sappy does, they pay well, they give performers a pass for the entire weekend and they also provide a musicians’ free brunch and dinner every day of the festival. The Sunday brunch took place in the university
