Talk of the town

Please, let’s just kill the stereotype. Dash all thoughts from your mind of a lobster in a sou’ester playing a fiddle tune about a haunted bowl of chowder. East coast music—a world of styles beyond the tourist-friendly jigs and reels—has more than paid its dues, so let’s move onwards and upwards. In honour of East […]

Joel Plaskett and Shotgun Jimmie Team Up

Just a wee post about something nice during a murky week: those two beloved guys Joel Plaskett and Shotgun Jimmie are releasing a split 7″ on Plaskett’s New Scotland Records label called JimmiesStillJimmie/ThatsNotJoel. We have heard the Joel Plaskett side – amusingly, he’s the one who does “JimmiesStillJimmie” – and it’s a romping, slightly plaintive crunch-fest about being on the road and being a little sick of it. You can download it here: Joel Plaskett – Jimmie’s Still Jimmie And you can buy a physical copy of the 7″ over here.

Shine up them dancin’ shoes, folks. Word around the campfire is there’s going to be a flash mob tonight at the Joel Plaskett show at Celebration Square. England is Screaming

rich aucoin mind control As we speak, the Ghost Bees, Joel Plaskett and Rich Aucoin are all hanging out in Brighton, England with the likes of Groove Armada and Broken Social Scene, hopefully sharing bottles of Patron and cackling over their eventual domination of the world. They Did It

wooooooot! We are ecstatic to report that last night Amelia Curran took home the Roots and Traditional Recording of the Year statuette for Hunter Hunter, while Joel Plaskett captured Adult Alternative Recording of the Year for Three at the Junos award ceremony in St. John’s. We think it’s particularly sweet that Curran was awarded her […]

Best Album

To say that response to Joel Plaskett’s ambitious triple album Three is positive is as big an understatement as Lady Gaga’s lightning- bolt headpiece. Shortlisted for the Polaris Prize, Plaskett now has a bunch of ECMAs and Best of Music awards to add to the mantle too. Recorded with “talented family and friends,” Three is […]

Best Male Solo Artist

Joel Plaskett’s rusting touring vehicle, a former Quebec Hydro truck, will be retired soon, with an impressive 495,000 touring kilometres on it. There’s a new one waiting in the wings, waiting to whisk the tall man away: He’s off again, first with his Thrush Hermit reunion tour, then 11 dates with The Barenaked Ladies and […]

Straight Thrush

After over 10 years apart, Thrush Hermit returns to life with a nearly sold-out nine-date tour and an eight-disc box set chronicling the life and times of the Hermit. And questions abound: will the band’s trademark “Rock” sign make an appearance? Will the box set have the Street Cents theme song? Yes, if the delivery […]

Peanut Butter Juno-Time

photo by the lovely Julé Malet-Veale The Juno nominations were announced this morning, and although the list features the usual suspects (Nickleblegh, Billy Talent, Michael Bublé and yes, despite the fact I quite like him, Joel Plaskett is ubiquitous enough at these award ceremonies that he, too counts as a usual suspect) there are some […]
