Sean Feucht holds rallies that blend upbeat Christian-rock songs with sermons that tie in his right-wing political views. Between praising President Donald Trump as “God’s chosen one” and suggesting that abortion supporters are “demons,” Feucht has repeatedly advocated for the fusion of church and state.

And now his MAGA Christian roadshow is hitting Halifax. It seems like nobody wants to take responsibility for approving this event as neither York Redoubt or Parks Canada have provided a response as to how and why this event was approved. And why it has been kept so secretive.

But you know who has provided a response? You! The consensus with Coast readers is clear: This is a terrible idea and Halifax does not want it.

Here are the official poll results:

And here are some of your best responses:

Yes. Free speech is free speech, regardless of the message.

“We have to defend free speech. All sorts of religious ideas is normalized in our society. No less controversial, is the Roman Catholic belief that their little wafer turns into the actual body of Christ. This belief is just as damaging and is totally normalized. There are many Evangelicals in Nova Scotia who believe in hell and Noah’s Ark. it’s called freedom of religion ( ie. believe any stupidity you want! ) But I guess we have to defend people’s right to be stupid😎”

“The answer to controversial speech is not less speech but more speech. Cancel culture is just short sighted. The response should be to loudly and clearly respond with well considered argument – in other words rebuttals not cancellation. I want people to speak up, not just say, “ no way”. That too easy. Having said that there is a line to be drawn and that is that hate speech is illegal. There are legal definitions of hate speech. Hate speech is not acceptable and when it happened perpetrators should be prosecuted. I find everything that this guy says and stands for to be abhorrent but until he crosses this line I will defend his right to free speech. Something that is more troubling though is how and why is he and his road show allowed to perform at a national historic site. This suggests an endorsement of his views, whether intentional or not. So there are 2 issues here and the question you asked conflates the two. I’ll cut you some slack and suggest you didn’t think about that even though you should have. ”

“I don’t agree with the message but as long as it isn’t inciting hate or calls to violent action it should go ahead. Also others should have the right to protest this event” “Free Speech as long as it is not a criminal event or not breaking any laws is okay. Because you don’t like the message, you want to ban it. There are events out there that I don’t like but this is a free country and I would like it to remain that way.”

“I’m from Chicago. Back in the 70’s the Nazis wanted to do a rally in the biggest Jewish neighbourhood in the city. Legally, with free speech, they had every right to. As a response, counter protestors came out in numbers almost 20 to 1, swallowing their little event and sending the resounding message they weren’t wanted. To this day, 50 years later, people remember that Nazis aren’t welcome in Chicago. It’s one of the reasons that Trump never rallies there. I believe it IS dangerous rhetoric that doesn’t belong in Halifax. But cutting speech isn’t how you fight it. Bury it in opposition and tell the world it’s not welcome.”

“Different beliefs and cultures, but above all, love has to abound without choosing but breaking barriers.”

“My first take was to say NO WAY, JOSÉ and then realized that sort of reaction is exactly what the MAGA crowd would want or expect. In a larger context, I feel historic sites should remain politics-free but clearly funding is an issue and they require events to pay the bills. So. The ideal would be fund historic sites so they DON’T have to make these decisions. My .02 cents”

“Although I consider this man and his agenda disgusting and terrifying, I must stand by freedom of speech-we can’t have it both ways. ”

“The best response here is not suppression but rather overwhelming avoidance.”

“Absolutely! It’s important that those who believe in Christ have the opportunity to praise our King amidst the clamour of all the loud, in-your-face worldly events.”

“I don’t agree with it, but limiting free speech is a slippery slope”

“As long as no laws are being broken, the event should proceed. If he breaks hate speech related or other laws, charge him.”

“. . . though perhaps Not at the govt. site without proper permits. A better location would be a local Wrestling Ring Affair post-conference Luncheon 😎”

“It’s perfect if granted permission because the fort represents that same western belief we have to fight and crush all of the resistance to our Christian beliefs…his message is for the uneducated Christian zealot. Jesus was about love NOT fighting and crushing others.”

No. It’s dangerous rhetoric that doesn’t belong in Halifax.

“That Parks Canada approved this event is outrageous. In the event that it goes on it would be interesting to know who provided funding. Furthermore while some Canadian musicians have cancelled US tours for fear of reprisals, people like this can come to Canada to share their verbal venom. ”

“There is enough bullshit going on around here, we don’t need US MAGA freaks in our Province, we have enough of our own!”

“Keep the negative American influencers in the US. We don’t need them here. We must stand up for a just and inclusive society if only to show that we will not be dominated by the present administration under Trump and his cronies.”

“This person, and those of his ilk, are divisive and cold-hearted in their beliefs, ideology and rhetoric. They are intolerant and ruthlessly exclusive, though they expect(and demand) all those outside of their self-absorption and selfish directives should be tolerant of them. They will abuse and abase any historic site to and for their own ends, to the benefit of no one else. ”

“This event is not only offensive, it is explicitly contrary to the stated goals and values of Parks Canada as can be seen on their website. Who approved this, encouraged it, enabled it? And why, one wonders, were we not informed until just 4 days prior to the scheduled event? ”

“Canadian values focus on inclusion, personal & social freedoms and people’s rights to choose. Inclusion does not mean we should welcome or support MAGA-like views being promoted through quasi-religious music events hosted on public lands. Canada has laws against hate and this musician appears to have views that often lead to hate related actions. If his music promotes those views he should not be allowed to perform here. This is Canada, not the US.”

“Somebody is completely asleep at the switch to have let this happened. This should result in severe discipline for the decision maker who allowed this travesty (to be scheduled). My heavens, what is happening to us??”

“This is beyond insane. When the story behind this gets uncovered it’s going to be a s**t show I think. There’s some nasty crap happening here.”

“anyone who supports a felon like Trump should not be welcomed into Canada. To think he will be delivering his Vitriol at an Historical site is outrageous. He should hold his session in front of the waste treatment plant if we cannot keep him out. He delivers hate speech and we do not need someone like him to show us the way to any where Church and state do not belong together. ”

“Anything that promotes Trump as the saviour of world has no place on our soil.”

“That bastard and Trump are not welcome here in Canada. They are the Devil in disguise. Greed, hatred, and a total disregard for our morals is not how Canadians are raised or how we live.”

“We welcome everyone in HRM as long as they are willing to welcome everyone. This group only welcomes the ones that are aligned with their beliefs and want the governments to be aligned with only their beliefs. And if they are pro Trump/MAGA, sorry but we DO NOT WANT YOU HERE Bye Bye”

“A concert by an performer whose words violate the principles and standards of the venue makes no sense. Parks Canada has firmly stated their belief the inclusion is the only way. The organization makes efforts to provide an experience where everyone is safe, welcomed and has access to facilities the exact opposite of what this performer represents. Shame on them for approving this spectacle.”

“How can this be allowed at a federal, historical, site. How can this be allowed to cross the border? How did Sean Feucht get through Customs? This can not happen! Just went to Ft Redoubt and they are setting up Port a Potty’s Please Stop this Hate! ”

“No– we do NOT need purveyors of hate, misogyny, homophobia, racism, white supremacy or authoritarian/ dictatorship modes of government from the USA to pollute our air or our National war memorial spaces. Let them proselytize below our border! Thanks for speaking up and contacting the Houston Gov’t . Hopefully they will force Parks Canada to cancel the event. ”

Secret third option: Julie sucks.

“Yes if you can publish your “news” magazine and write an editorial based on your views and your opinions. Then this person is entitled to do the same. Who’s to say who is right? And who is wrong? Is his message any less meaningful to him and the people that support his views than yours’ and your supporters?”

“The violence will be from those who try to stifle it. Julie, in your spare time, you need to reread 1984 by G.O. ”

“Funny how you speak out against this but support left wing meetings, and other agendas that many of us oppose, but are too polite to say anything.”

“100%. If other communities can hold concerts and parades in the centre of the city for multiple days, into the early morning hours, for all residents to endure, any group should be allowed to speak their truths. I would suggest recalling your message because it clearly shows your bias.”

“You’re a bigot. Started your diatribe outright bigotry. Christian values often but not always align with So called MAGA which is used as a slander. Good luck with your hatred”

“So biased. Hard to pick out what is going on around town without the ignorant liberal rhetoric.”

“Your newsletter is clearly bias toward your own thinking patterns. I found today’s newsletter very disappointing.”

UPDATE:

At 11pm Tuesday night, media were issued the following statement from Parks Canada:

Parks Canada is aware that members of the public have expressed concern about an event scheduled to take place at York Redoubt National Historic Site on July 23, 2025. This is not a Parks Canada event, but one that was being hosted by a permit holder. Permit holders must follow conditions outlined in the permit including a safety plan. Due to evolving safety and security considerations based on confirmation of planned protests, input from law enforcement, and the security challenges with the configuration of York Redoubt, Parks Canada has reassessed the conditions of the permit and potential impacts to community members, visitors, concert attendees and event organizers. After careful review, and due to heightened public safety concerns, Parks Canada has notified the organizer that the permit has been revoked.

  1. Remember folks, this is not a scientific poll. Such “voodoo polls” reflect only the views of those who choose to respond. It does not provide any statistical significance…
