As reported by the CBC, the altar cross was returned to King’s chapel this week by a young man of about 19 years of age with a tote bag full of laundry. Amen.

An “ancient and irreplaceable” altar cross is missing and presumed stolen from the University of King’s College chapel.

According to a release, sometime between Saturday, Aug. 2 and Monday Aug. 4 the cross was taken from the chapel on Coburg, Road. As summer’s not the busiest time on campus, its theft wasn’t discovered until a few days later.

“This irreplaceable cross is a central and beautiful part of the worship of the chapel and has been in our community for more than a century,” said King’s student and chapel warden Verity Thomson.

Dal Security and Halifax Regional Police have been looking into the theft for the past few weeks, while members of the King’s community have been visiting pawn shops and putting up posters to try and track down the thieves. Now the school’s chaplain, Gary Thorne, is offering a $200 reward for any information leading to the recovery of the item.

“We are now requesting the help and support of the larger community to help us recover our precious cross which has great spiritual and historical value to the chapel community and the university” said Thomson.

The foot-high cross, mostly composed of brass, has been with King’s since the 1800s when the university was in Windsor, NS. It was previously stolen once in the ’70s as a frosh prank, but quickly returned after a press release about its theft.

King’s is hoping today’s release will produce a similar result, though Thomson fears it may no longer be in the city.

“What people are saying, is if it was stolen by a thief who’s hoping to sell it, they’ll try and get it as far away as possible from where they stole it.”

Anyone with information regarding the missing cross can contact the chapel at 902-717-0950. Amnesty is being offered for voluntary return, but “full prosecution” if it is found by other means.

  1. That’s what I thought too, Cranky. But then I double-checked the calendar: The cross disappeared two weekends before Diner en Blanc. King’s is only now going public about the theft.

  2. If “God” wanted them to keep it, it would still be there. It’s all part of his plan, no?
