Oh, Steve Streatch. Last year I gave Streatch his first non-failing grade, a D, to reward his opposition to “tax reform”—an easy stance since his district would’ve seen taxes double, but still. And when he said sensible things about the convention centre, I was coming around to him. But then…sigh. I could take a few insensitive comments about dousing tires with gasoline to start a fire to burn off crop stubble, but when Streatch came out as a full-on global warming denier and dissed the venerable Al Gore himself, well, that was enough. We don’t need American-style anti-science, anti-environmentalist mining company shills on council.

There are a lot of issues facing District 1, which basically boil down to addressing the lack of economic opportunity. I’ve said before that I’d like to see Streatch push HRM to develop a local food strategy and farm support program to help the people in his rural district, and I think there are possibilities for municipal support of fisheries and woodlots as well. But Streatch is more inclined to resource exploitation than stewardship: He wants to open his district up to more gold mining, for example. That’s a sure way to help a handful of mining companies, but doesn’t do much for regular people.

How to improve: Ditch the anti-environment rhetoric. Hug a hippie.

  1. Steve Streatch speaks his mind, and I like very much that he is a climate change denier. If he runs for Mayor I will vote for him for this reason alone.

I’m tired of all of those sappy liberal tofu eaters running our city. I want to see some hard headed conservatives take over for awhile. I know I’m not alone on this. I can’t wait foir the next municipal election. Can’t wait.

    Cheers.

  2. Streatch is a good councillor and is on the correct side of most issues. Common sense goes a long way with me.

  3. I agree Steven Streatch speaks his mind, unfortunatly when it comes to the latest comments he made about his own fire service. He did not know what he was talking about and most of his comments were unconfirmed and untrue.

  4. I had no idea Steve was a climate change denier.
His value as a councillor just went up in my books & I plan on voting for him again. approximately 40 million Canadians can do nothing about the worlds climate when we’re up against almost 7 billion others who don’t give a shit.
What we need are people like him who speak their mind on behalf of us in his area & our real needs… & saving the planet has little to do with the needs of the Musquodoboit valley residents.
WHat we need out here is maybe a bit more road repair, & making it almost impossible to turn famland into Subdivisions. Screw almost impossible, & lets just make it impossible.
