The 22nd annual Emera Blue Nose Marathon transformed Halifax into a bustling hub of athleticism and community spirit this past weekend, drawing over 10,000 participants. Despite wet and cloudy conditions, runners of all ages and abilities took to the streets, embodying the marathon’s reputation as “The People’s Marathon.”
The event spanned three days, from May 16 to 18, and featured a variety of races including the full marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K, youth runs, and a team relay. All races began at the Emerca Oval and took participants on an adventure through Halifax’s hilly streets, showcasing attractions such as the harbour, Lake Banook, the North End, Point Pleasant Park, and the city’s waterfront.
Two Halifax residents took home first place in the men’s and women’s categories. Maksym Pokotylets finished with a time of 2:33:09, and Alexandra Quimby completed the race in 2:56:36. Their impressive performances highlighted the competitive spirit of the marathon, even amidst less-than-ideal weather conditions.
Some keen runners even went for a double header. Sam Cole, communications and marketing co-ordinator for the marathon, took part in the 5K run on Saturday and the 10K the following day.
“Shoes are definitely soaked, got a few blisters from the water, and the bridge was a struggle with the wind and the rain, but at the end of the day, it’s fun to take part and the energy here makes up for it,” Cole told CBC News.
Beyond the races, the marathon brought out Halifax’s community pride. Local residents lined the streets to cheer on runners, and numerous volunteers helped to ensure the event went smoothly.
Halifax Transit also supported the event by offering free bus and ferry services to participants and volunteers sporting either race bibs or credentials.
The 2025 Emera Blue Nose Marathon concluded Sunday after three days of races and related events, marking another edition of the annual race series that has become a fixture in the city’s spring calendar.
