In an update to our story involving the potential strike set for school support workers on Monday, Nov 2, CUPE says the provincial government indicated it will return to the bargaining table This avoids the Friday, Oct 30 deadline set by the union earlier this week.
In a press release distributed on Wednesday, Oct 28, the union says they are currently gathering their eight union leaders, collectively known as the Nova Scotia Board Council of Unions (NSSBCU), to discuss the government’s new position.
The ask from the union was for a $3.50 hourly increase for their members by 2029. The province had originally offered $1.62 for most job classifications, according to CUPE.
The union represents over 5,500 workers from across Nova Scotia’s provincial school districts. Their members include early childhood educators, school bus drivers, custodians, teaching assistants, support workers, library workers and more.
“We will be happy to recommend a tentative agreement to our members that addresses their significant and serious concerns about their working conditions and compensation,” says NSSBSU chair Nelson Scott in the release.
