This is a heads up for hockey fans, if you can tear yourselves away from the playoffs for half a second to read the news. The details of exactly where and exactly when are still sketchy at the moment, but by mid-summer we should have a location of Pro Hockey Life open at Dartmouth Crossing. The self-described “megastore” was founded in Montreal in 1973, and now is the largest hockey specialty retailer in the world. The store will showcase “all things hockey, from the latest in sticks, skates, protective gear and accessories to hockey attire, memorabilia and more.”

  1. uugghh…another “super” big box store…these places drive me nuts.
    DO NOT SUPPORT this store.
Just a bunch of out-of-province investors invading our local market.
Don’t support the “suits and ties” of hockey. They are in it for the $$…not the community or love of the game etc…
If you buy from ANY big box stores…GOLF TOWN, SPORT CHEK…you are supporting the theory of “let’s put the local small businesses OUT of buiness” and invade the community with a “fancy” store. Lets get the communities money and send it back to head office in Quebec, Calgary etc…the money does not stay here in NS.
Boycot the Big Box…support Local. Avery farm markets, Sobeys, Sportwheels, etc… these are YOUR stores.
    The choice is yours.

  2. Bring on the big box stores! Local retailers needs to reduce their pricing if they want to keep customers. Or better yet, order direct from the USA and it’ll be even cheaper.

  3. Hey Attitude – you wouldn’t happen to be small store operator would you???

Regardless, your statement is completely unfounded and ill-informed. One of these big box stores pumps more money into our local economy and creates more jobs than ten of our “local” stores as you put it.

And as a consumer, I want the best choice of product at the best price, whether its golf, hockey or groceries. Period. I’m not interested in subsidizing somebody’s inferior store just because the ultimate shareholder lives in NS. If a Haligonian puts out a better offering, I’ll gladly support it. Until then, it’s “attitudes and opinions” like yours that keep us from progressing and having access to what we deserve.

    Get real.

  4. I agree with JKS. I just bought goalie pads including blocker and trap for less than I would have paid for pads alone. This equals hundreds of dollars savings, that would be coming out of my pockets. In a time where money is tight, the choices are clear. I need to look for #1 and I don’t see why I should be paying the local guys rent to keep paying higher prices on what I purchase.
