The brainchild of stylist Michael Phillips—formerly employed at Fred—One Block (2010 Gottingen Street, 404-9494, scheduled to open January 3) is a haircutting space with a vision to be more accessible and laid back than the average salon in HRM. Phillips’ intention is that his spot, located across from Propeller Brewery, will be the kind of place where dropping by to hang out and talk hair/whatever is highly encouraged and events will be held on a regular basis.
“Some ideas I have heard so far include DIY haircutting workshops, gender-bending haircutting sessions, sliding scale payment on certain days for underwaged/unemployed,” he explains. “I hope to experiment with different things and find out what works and what new things we can try.”
