Having problems with your car insurance company? Well, don’t bother calling Nova Scotia’s insurance consumer advocate. George Jordan’s number is no longer in service. His job was eliminated last summer. The Tory government of John Hamm appointed Jordan in April 2003 when public anger at the government and the big insurance companies was reaching the boiling point. The big companies were jacking up rates—by an average of 66 percent—and refusing to renew some policies. Instead of telling the companies to take a hike and bringing in cheaper, public auto insurance, Hamm appointed Jordan, then collaborated with the Liberals to cap insurance payouts on so-called “minor” injuries. Within a couple of years, Jordan’s job was quietly downgraded to part-time. He ended up working only one day a week before his position was chopped altogether last summer. Jordan himself has landed on his feet, however. In the election expected this spring, he’ll be running as a Tory candidate in Dartmouth.

  1. Goerge Jordan formerly employed at CBC for several decades is a Tory ?
Everyone knows only Liberals or Dippers are on the payroll.
And by the way, insurance rates went down for young drivers.
    Older drivers paid for that.

  2. Pray that you never have to use this service, because insurance companies are still bad; I’ve been driving for 10 years (no Accidents) now and I just saw a reduction in my rate last year. They’re still hosing us.

  3. The insurance companies have far too much control in our daily lives. The government mandates insurance and does not monitor the situation. Shame! I have been driving for 40 years. I am rated in the lowest risk category – a clean driving record – no accidents ever and I have NEVER had a reduction in my premium rates. To the contray, I have seen many hikes. It is a deficit model. The conscientious pay for those who do not care!

  5. Those of you have never had an accident do not know how badly your insurer will work you over if you need to claim for care for your whiplash or injured back etc. You will discover your premiums paid for not much service and a lot of aggravation. You do not perhaps know that manitoba has had govt sponsored insurance for twenty years and the prices are much more reasonable and since there is not the driving need to make huge profits (it’s a service, not a mega-industry), the adjudicators don’t force you into things you don’t want to do. Which does indeed happen here. We badly need an ombudsman or trouble shooter because right now, you have no rights.

  6. My 21yr old son just got an auto insurance quote for only PLPD of $6300. Who can tell me why this is right??? As far as I’m concerned, the insurance industry is nothing more than a prime example of legalized extortion.
