City staff has written a mostly favourable report about the prospects of keeping the Common skating oval (see thecoast.ca/OvalReport), but stresses that the issue needs more investigation. They will bring a more detailed report to city council in March. With so much community enthusiasm for The Oval, and with the prospect of it becoming permanent, we got to thinking: Shouldn’t The Oval have a name besides “The Oval”? Twitter correspondent @huskermould suggests “The Harold MacKay Memorial Power Plant” for the electrical unit on the site, and that’s pretty much unbeatable, we think, but that still leaves The Oval wide open. What do you think? Leave your suggestions for a permanent name for the permanent oval on the comments on this post at thecoast.ca/bites, and we’ll arbitrarily decide upon the best suggestion, which we’ll award with all sorts of accolades, to be determined.

  1. let call it what most ppl will call it regardless of what name they come up with.. The Oval on The Commons

  2. Call me Oval’d Fashioned, but I just like “The Oval” We don’t have some big fancy name for the Commons, we just call it “The Commons”

  3. What’s wrong with the Goodlife Oval? I don’t see why The Coast has a problem with sponsorship (see Municipal Malfunction). Would The Coast prefer raising taxes or charging an admission fee?

  4. Call it the Oval. That’s what we call it now. That’s what it will be called after it’s “named” if that indeed ever happens. It’s not like there is another Oval we might confuse it with. “Oh. THAT oval.” I rest my case.
