Despite, or maybe because of, its many reinventions, MIX: Fresh Kitchen (5171 Salter Street, 429-9571) has closed. Manager and co-owner Chris Richards did not return any messages requesting comment, and star chef Ray Bear recently Tweeted that he was selling his share in the business and leaving town. With Bear gone it’s hard to imagine his fine-dining resto East, scheduled to open on Blowers, will do so.
Though unconfirmed at this time, The Feed has heard that a deal is in motion to turn MIX into a lounge a la Tribeca or Mosaic, featuring an appie menu and DJs and dancing. More on that when we have more details.

For such a “Star Chef”, Mr. Bear sure seems to have hard keeping a successful restaurant going???
I always wondered who that douche was in those shitty billboard ads by the bridge. Douche in a cornfield looking uncomfortable…douche in oilskins holding a fish looking uncomfortable….whoever the company was that came up with that probably isn’t in business anymore. It was him, right?
he sure looks angry, i don’t think angry food tastes good
Because he’s thinking “fuck, another grease fire for me to deal with”
the dude behind him looks like he wants to commit seppuku
He’s thinking “fuck, this prima donna can barely operate a can opener”
Ray Bear is a sad joke to the culinary world. please, stop referring to him as a “celebrity chef” or a “star” chef because he is neither. he is an arrogant, smug, mediocre talented, and an egomaniac hack of a ‘chef’. i think his two failed restaurant ventures is enough evidence.
i read some recent quotes from him saying idiotic things like: fine dining restaurants don’t succeed in Halifax, the maritimes have no food culture, the ‘market’ is slow, he can cook comfort food with the best of them. oh, and he wasn’t making money! well, how long was Mix open anyways? a year approximately; it’s pretty standard for most businesses to not turn a profit for the first 3 years…
good riddance i say. what a douche.
Hm. You are all wrong. Swear away. It is just so easy to cut someone up isn’t it? When was the last time you Built someone up? Love your profanity. It doesn’t make you sound less intelligent, Oh no.
He is a wonderful Chef. He may not be a wonderful business owner, but they are 2 different things. Go back to your Kraft Dinner and your empty apartments. Just stay indoors. No one wants your attitude here.
I dine out on a regular basis, everything from the $$ to the $$$$ on The Coast’s food page, so shove your kraft dinner reference, BearFanboy.
I know a few people that have worked for the bear man, and it doesn’t surprise me this is happening. Last time he up and left the province, leaving his employees in the lurch…. Real nice guy to work for….
