This morning, Cole McLean of Atlantic Canada Rocks announced that Metallica will play Citadel Hill July 14. The group has been touring with Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax on a the BIG FOUR tour; there’s no word if the other bands will be playing in Halifax.

And in the Saint John Times & Transcript, McLean tells us that:

What’s perhaps more interesting is that it sounds like Harold MacKay, whose company Power Promotions went bankrupt after a series of outdoor shows in the city, is said to be the promoter behind the potential Metallica date.

I called McLean to see what’s behind the rumour, but he wouldn’t reveal his sources. He did say that his sources tell him that MacKay is actively seeking out concerts to promote here in Halifax, but could not firm up the Metallica-MacKay connection.

But a source tells The Coast that MacKay is in the employ of Molson, which is providing financing for the Metallica show.

Molson has not immediately returned phone calls, and MacKay can’t be located.

  1. Holy Mother of Fuck! This can’t be true, but if it is, I’ll be there no questions asked!

I wonder IF Mackay were to actually sell tickets this time around, and enough of them to change venue sites, if it were to happen? How many people can fit on the Hill? Not enough IMO to pay for the bands unless you charge a lot or get a “donation” from the city…

  2. Holy shit! It sounds as though this is speculation at the moment, but please keep us up to date on this!

  3. How many times does Halifax have to take it in the ass from Harold MacKay before we say, “Ouch! Stop it!”

  4. fat fucking chance….
There’s no way in hell the 4 would come to this rinky dink hole…

I’ve been hearing this for a week now… and someone’s having a good laugh.

  5. good luck getting port a potties, food vendors, etc after Harold raped them and didn’t pay them last time…..it’s gonna be COD for the port a potties this year, mofo!

  6. You’re better off putting in the Civic center like they did with the Slayer concert last summer

  7. Saw Metallica in Sept. 2009 at the Bell Centre in Montreal. They had the place sold out for 2 nights. They might be old, but they put on an amazing show. Saw Megadeth last summer, and I think Mustaine’s fingers still fly faster than Hammett’s, but overall I enjoyed the Metallica show better. They made you feel like you were the luckiest audience in the world to be experiencing the show, and that they were the luckiest band in the world to be playing for you. Would love to see them come here.

  8. They put on an amazing show – I went to the Toronto show in 2009 and I’m heading to California to see the Big 4 show this Easter. Unfortunately, the promotions for the Big 4 in California says that it’s the first and only time all four bands (Metallica, Megadeath, Anthrax, Slayer) will be playing together, so sorry Halifax but don’t get your hopes up if you’re expecting to see all those bands! On the other hand, Metallica itself was amazing and shouldn’t be passed up if you get the chance to go 😀

  9. I find this so hard to believe. Mackay has some crazy connections to be hired by Molson to run a concert like this! Ha ha. Why would they hire someone who is a documented failure?

  10. @cbcoaster: This actually isn’t the first time they’ve played together. There was another Big 4 concert last year and I think there was one earlier this year as well.

  11. July Metallica concert equals a possibility of Lars hauling out those spandex shorts again.

  12. I would hope commenters are more concerned with the transparency of this potential concert, more so than the concert itself. I’d be stoked to see Slayer myself, but that’s besides the point. Just because a band you want to see is coming to Halifax, shouldn’t justify putting on ‘the blinders’ and allow concert promotion to have carte blanche, and ultimately getting itself into the entangled mess of it’s previous shows. I appreciate this isn’t the exact same situation…but still, I would hope promises of a metal show isn’t all that’s required to turn us into unquestioning sacks of jelly.

  13. H Mackay? really? wow Molson must be guzzling its product to do a deal with this guy, a good comment was made, who is going to do business with him, vendor’s etc. I would think its a Show Me the Money Up Front before that happens.

  14. Alright, so I found out about this not long ago, I love metallica, and I do find this hard to believe. What I do know, Last week when I first heard about this happening, I went straight to the site, and on july 14 there was a tour event in Europe.. I was instantly heart broken. But I checked a few minutes ago on their site and that venue was pulled, there is no July 14 show posted, but there is a show posted for quebec city july 16. Good news? I dunno. But we will see what happens.

  15. Um, That ugly, huge-ass permanent power hut was built last summer by the oval specifically for power-intensive bands like this one. Why the heck are they moving the venue down to….aw, who the hell cares? No-one can figure out the logic in this city any more. Next I guess there’ll be a petition because the stage is blocking the view from the *&^% hill, too.

Actually this is the one and only time that Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax played together in the Big 4 in NORTH AMERICA .. they have a few shows coming up together but it’s all in Europe then they’re going their own ways. However, Lars said at the end of the show in California this past saturday “Don’t worry.. America will be seeing us very f**king soon!” hopefully that means more shows for Canada too seeing as how they already added a date in Montreal!!

  17. IF it is true that’d be so awesome since the hubby is a HUGE Metallica fan – he’d be there with bells on…looking forward to seeing/hearing more info on this – providing it is TRUE!!!

  18. Is this city run by complete morons? Monkeys? The Halifax JAZZ FESTIVAL runs from July 8-16 and they allow a huge concert like this?! You have to wonder why any creative people at all stay here. It’s like the city hates the local arts scene. What a bunch of complete TOOLS behind the scheduling for this. SHAME.

  19. I live in the neighbourhood of the Halifax Common and over years have felt the flagrant disregard by people who arrange “cultural” events in public spaces. No regard is given for the consequences of the actions of some City Hall “representatives”. Obviously they regard the public living spaces (the green spaces) of Halifax as a way of gouging the peoples money and doing questionable deals with “businesses” that are absent from Nova Scotia and therefore “not accountable”. The Halifax Common belongs to the residents of Halifax and is for the enjoyment of healthy sport for all and the freedom of family and community events that are not under the dictatorship of private money interests.

They should go away the concerts and other money obsessed events should go away. They are causing noise pollution, littering, dirt and too many crowds. They bring too many cars into the neighbourhood and disrupt the peace and quiet of the neighbourhood.
