The mayor is the only position that is elected by voters from across the Halifax Regional Municipality, from Hubbards in the southwest to Ecum Secum, three hours to the east, from the outer edges of Upper Sackville to downtown. Even the lighthouse keeper on Sable Island can vote for mayor.

Update, September 10: Vince hall has dropped his candidacy for mayor. His press release:
I am announcing that I am dropping out of the race for HRM Mayor and supporting the candidacy of Mike Savage.
I entered this race because I believe I have good ideas for the city accompanied by a strong skill set and I also didn’t want to see a coronation.
Given that the campaign is essentially just commencing, I have recently met with Mr. Savage and we had a discussion around his ideas and vision for the city including how much of an effort he has put into reaching out to people throughout HRM.
After mulling things over I have decided to support his candidacy as his political experience and skills will be an asset in the Mayor’s position.
I would like to thank those who have volunteered and offered support to me.
Regards,
Vince Hall
Original analysis:
With current mayor Peter Kelly out of the race, former Liberal MP from Dartmouth Mike Savage is the presumed heir to the mayoral chair. But nobody likes an uncontested election, so it’s good to see the other candidates fighting the good fight. We have north end hair stylist and chicken advocate Fred Connors, former Cape Breton Municipality councillor Vince Hall, retired cop Tom Martin and college student Matthew Worona in the race.
