Lorelei Nicoll replaces the absolutely horrendous Harry McInroy, the repeat “F” councillor who retired last year, and for that alone Nicoll should gain the eternal gratitude of the people of Cole Harbour.

For her part, Nicoll is gracious, perhaps to a fault. As a council newbie, she’s not moved up the learning curve as quickly as I’d like to see. But she has good instincts—she understands, and complains about, the problems transit users have in moving around within Cole Harbour, as opposed to simply commuting into downtown and back. Now she needs to take that complaint and do something about it, but it’ll call for wheeling and dealing to get her fellow councillors on board, and knocking some staffers’ heads around a bit. Gotta lose some of the charm and learn to play hardball, see.

Otherwise, Nicoll hasn’t yet made a substantive mark, or outlined a clear ideology. Partly that’s a mirror of her suburban district, which is itself a little unclear about what it’s about—what Cole Harbour needs, after the sad abandonment of the McInroy years, is a champion with a vision of what Cole Harbour is. Nicoll’s assignment is to become that leader; it’s too early to say whether she’s up to the task.

  1. BOOO! Clearly you haven’t actually sat down and talked with the councillor! And try to get the grades straight; the article says “F” and the subtitle says “C-“! Lorelei is passionate and caring about her community, but she isn’t a shit disturber like what you folks seem to be looking for. If that is how you rate councillors, based on their barbarianisms then forget it, you’ve just lost my respect. At least, unlike other councillors, whether you know them personally or not, she will actually return your calls and emails. Just remember, especially when you are working with bureaucrats (city staff included) it is better to be nice to them than to piss them off, cause if you piss them off they simply will start to ignore you. Lorelei is a fine example of the type of person who understands how important this relationship is! I will give her one thing though, though she is very charming and not much of a head basher she is persistant. And I am a firm believer that in the “in the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins, not through strength but through persistence.” Lorelei is as mighty as the stream.

  2. ***Correction. I misread that section… My mistake. I am glad at least she outdid the last councilor.
