Pavel Chekov. Tasha Yar. Boba Fett. Chief Galen Tyrol. If any—or all—of these names are familiar to you, then you might be a science fiction junkie.
You also might also be aware that the actors who play all those characters (on Star Trek, Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica, respectively) are coming to Halifax for a big science fiction/fantasy/comic spectacular, called the HAL-CON : Sci-Fi / Fantasy / Comic Convention, along with a slew of major comic book creative talents. Woo!
But before you get too excited, it’s not until October 2010. Frak! While you wait—and sharpen your Bat’leth—you can be part of the hype-building by visiting cafepress.com/HAL_CON or call 877-809-1659 to pick up the official merchandise for the convention (and help defray costs, presumably). You can get hoodies, t-shirts, trucker caps, thermoses, clocks, teddy bears, even dog t-shirts all emblazoned with the awesome Bender-esque Citadel Clock Tower Robot icon.
Now, if they’d only rename it “HAL-9000”-CON. (A little 2001:A Space Odyssey reference there for you non-subscribers.)

Er, I was at HalCon 10, way back in, well, must have been 1985? The one at the Westin, with the bad acid, and the curtains being set on fire? Didn’t Halcon go totally bankrupt? It was fun, I went to 9 and 10, it was great, and we need something like it back, but I was under the impression that name was totally off limits forever and ever, amen. I am interested to hear how this is going down. So say we all, and all that.

It’s got the same name and same theme – but this event is being organized by a different group of people. This is going to be WAY better and less destructive!
Hey there, My Name is Malcolm Campbell. I am the Chairman of the HAL-CON Sci-Fi Fantasy Association. My group is not connected with the previous Halcon group that put con’s on in the 1980’s. It was back in July of last year I decided that Halifax was ready for a large scale comic type convention, and took it upon myself to get one organized. As for the name halcon was registered to another group untill 2006. I changed it slightly and made my association. I then surrounded my self with a great group of people and we are currently on our way! As stated in the article above we have celebrity guest signed and ready to come to our event. I made this my goal to secure these celebrities early and make sure we have a great experience for the people who attend. We are now looking into signing vendors, exhibitors, local artists and writers. We have alot of work ahead of us with only 18 months to go. So come October 2010..we hope to see all the sci-fi fantasy fans come to the Lord Nelson for a great weekend of fun!

Space 1999 ruled.
From the theme music, to the premise, to the actors themselves, it was, and is a classic. The re-mastered trailer looks pretty cool…
