Back in December, another new shop also slipped under my all-seeing shop radar. (Man, what was in the egg nog last year?) The Gourmet Cash and Carry (3700 Kempt Road) is an “international grocery that targets all ethnic groups from all corners of the globe,” says Johnny Namnoum, district manager for CLIC International Inc.,the Quebec-based wholesaler which supplies the store. Whether you’re craving couscous, searching for a rare Jamaican spice, shopping for kosher and halal meats, looking to chow down on authentic Turkish delight or cooking Chinese, the Cash and Carry probably has you covered. If they don’t have the product you’re looking for, the CLIC warehouse in Montreal might—which means the Cash and Carry can get it within five business days. You can’t really sneeze at the store’s prices, either (unless you’ve got a really bad cold). Wholesaler CLIC has a direct hand in running the business, so there’s little mark-up which means you can get huge bags of rice and beans—and the rest of the store’s wares—relatively inexpensively. The store has a bulk section geared toward local restaurants, but everything in the store is fair game for the general public. Call the Cash and Carry at 406-4101.
