Proving that environmentally conscious fashion design is more than just a season’s trend, Fashion Takes Action is launching the first FTA Design Forward awards.
Close to 40 designers made the first round, and it’s now down to 14, including locals deux fm and Laura Chenoweth.
But what makes these awards interesting (and credible) is the level of transparency, and the informative write-ups on where each designer shines and could use improvement. If you’re at all interested in how your clothes made it onto your back, it’s a good read.
Designers were graded in four categories:
Materials Used (organic cotton, hemp, recycled polyester, etc.)
Production (local, fair trade, closed-loop environment, etc)
Design (quality, style, wearability)
Special Features (educate customers on eco friendly laundering techniques, alignment with an environmental charity, hangtags printed on FSC-certified high-post consumer recycled paper, etc)
Voting for the top 14, which also includes Pre Loved and Paper People Clothing, is now open to the public. Pick your favourite until April 16. Then the top three designers duke it out in front of a panel of judges for prizes worth over $50,000. Pays to be green.
