More than 1,000 cases in a day

Nova Scotia’s first COVID report of 2022 may be “abbreviated” for the holidays, but it has enough information to remind us that the disease still sucks. This Sunday report mentions there were 709 new cases that would have been announced yesterday, January 1. At any other point in the pandemic this would be Nova Scotia’s daily infection record. But for today alone, the province is announcing 1,184 new cases. That’s a major new record, nearly 500 cases more than yesterday, the first time Nova Scotia has had above 1,000 infections in a day.

Canadian cases 2021-22

There was a point in July 2021, when the delta variant was causing an increase in COVID infections around the world, that Canada seemed safe from the fourth wave. By August, however, that point had passed, and case numbers around the country started to rise again. This graph charts the number of new infections every day in each province and territory, using the 7-day moving average to mitigate single-day anomalies (including a lack of weekend reporting in several jurisdictions including British Columbia and Nova Scotia).
