The Chebucto Road saga comes to head next week, provided council pulls heads out of their collective—hey, hey!
Connaught-Quinpool councillor and 2008 mayoral candidate Sheila Fougere presented a 3,000-name petition to council on Tuesday night, on behalf of the Chebucto Neighbourhood Association. The petition asks council to delay the road-widening project by one year while other options are explored.
To quote the petition: “Faced with all of these negatives—the destruction of a neighbourhood, increase in peninsular congestion, encouraging environmentally unsustainable transport, hindering environmentally sustainable transport, a cost of $3.9 million—and little to no benefit (the bottleneck simply moves up the hill) we, the voting citizens of the HRM, urge council to find an alternative.”
Here, here! (Pounding of tables, grunting of assent). Fougere promised to take the issue to a vote next Tuesday. We’ll be watching.
