City council has to deal with a lot of petty stuff, from potholes to leash laws. It’s not quite as glamorous as today’s federal politicians, who get to play Santa Claus and hand out a bunch of Tru-dough across the country. But local leaders rule when it comes to development, which is probably the most important thing to the city. Buildings set the tone on the public stage. A great one—hey there, Central Library—can inspire, while a clunker like Maritime Centre succeeds only in casting a pall over its whole neighbourhood. (Insert prayer for the convention centre here.)

Halifax’s recent building boom is still happening, with cranes all over the sky and plans creeping through city hall. Every development has an impact, whether it’s on the next-door neighbour or the skyline, so we looked for the projects that are coming together this year that are going to have the biggest effect on the city. From a proposal for a tower that will be one of the tallest buildings in town, to a site that owes it existence to pure spite on city council, here are the six developments that will shape Halifax the most in 2016.

  1. I give the video an 8 out of Ben oops I mean 10.

    – solid acting
    – great bread buns I mean puns

But I had to take 2 points away because of the bad sound editing. Music was too loud at some points, one guys voice was louder than the other. Compression! EQ! Use it!

  2. Awesome video. It’s great to see these buildings happening. The town was absolutely dead for 20 years, so let’s keep it going!
This means building responsibly. There will be times when politics screws up the process (the wellington approval is pure petty immaturity), but HRM by design is a success and was passed through the same process. We can do it.

  3. The Green Lantern was on the Ground Floor; the First Floor is above the Ground Floor.
    Good video.

  4. I’m liking this newer way of delivering news and updates. The video was enjoyable and informative. I especially like how attention was paid to the history of the sites. It is important not to lose this as we move forward.

  5. I wish the developers would keep more of the exterior facades of the old buildings. The thing that I love most of this city is the history of the area. It seems shameful to pull down a building that has been around since the 1800’s
