Why would anyone want to live in this city? There are no jobs unless you want to work on a casual basis with no benefits and be tortured by permanent staff because they know they have you over a barrel because they know there is no decent work out there. Workplace harassment, no lunch breaks oh and the boss says cover for me I have a nail appointment??? — It’s not what you know Helifax!

you think it should be what you know? You couldn’t be further from truth. No one gives a shit about the degree on the wall, they give a shit about what sort of value you can offer. Your pay comes from value and perceived value, not the fancy schmancy degree on the wall.
Welcome to Hillbilly Hollow. How was the ride in from Pictou?
Bumpy, PUP. You rarely get a smooth ride on the lobster wagon with all those tiny reins to handle. The lobsters love the pavement but the frantic scuttling causes a rare condition known as ‘claw bump’. Not a pretty sight after a 100 mile trek.
So I assume, OP, that you have resumes out Canada-wide? Or are you one of these people that we’ll find bitching about the same thing 10 years from now? Your attitude will go a long way toward your success…..
Actually there are lots of jobs here; according to Stats Canada over 240,000 people are working in this city and the unemployment rate went down last month.
Maybe you are the problem and not the city.
Marry me (if you’re a guy ONLY) and you’ll get benefits with a partner who has permanent status and a high paying job. Problem solved.
Totally valid bitch. But you need to know where to draw the line. Tortured by permanent staff? Nah, don’t allow that. You’re a temp. You know you’re not going to stay long or ever be offered a permanent position. So own that. Permanent staff (that are not your boss) being shitty to you? Tell them to fuck off. No breaks? Illegal. Go take one. They yell at you for that? Who cares? Explain your position and don’t worry about it. You can get away with a lot if you don’t give a fuck. You’re a temp worker so your skills are probably minimal. You’re a dime a dozen. You can easily be replaced. But guess what? Shitty, contract jobs with no benefits are also a dime a dozen and they can easily be replaced. Find the least shitty one you can.
I had no idea these problems were unique to Helifax.
When you leave, there’s (one more) reason that I love this town…
As our erstwhile colleague in bitching, montrealman, frequently said, “You should have stayed in school.” Seriously, if you want better pay, better working conditions, more job opportunities and more respect then you obviously need better skills. Figure out how to get them. Bitching may feel good but the surest way to a better situation is to take charge of your career. Now go get ’em Tiger!
I think your bubble might be too small
