The ad campaign that ran in the west urged us to return home to lower cost of living, employment and for general happiness.

I have been unemployed for two months and can not even get a job at a fast food chain, my rent is just as high as it was in the big city and I don’t feel safe nor happy here.

Less stat days, big city crime, unreliable public transit, bigotry and – I have not even started with the social and fashion faux pas(es). —Grass is not always greener in NS

  1. a) go back
    b) if you can’t even get a job at a chain store then its probably not us that’s the problem, its you.

  2. Really? I’ve been here over three years and I have only been unemployed once when the place I worked at closed down… Print out an app. for the NSLC… apply at your nearest store… work your butt off over Christmas… then you’ll have made more than enough to go back out West. Problem solved.

  3. Good point PF…. I’m glad I re-read your post– you don’t want to know what I thought it said…

  4. I’m of the opinion that some people who can’t get jobs here, don’t get them because subconciously, they don’t want to get them. They want to prove their negative points about this place. My brother in law moved back from Iqaluit and found a job within 2 weeks of looking. Further to TheBlackRose’s point, I’ve been here 10 years, been unemployed maybe twice and found new work within days.

  5. Yeah there’s probably something wrong with your resume like you put the wrong phone number on it or something because if you can’t even get a job at a fast food place then…just forget about this whole life thing.

  6. Hahahaha they run those ads in Ontario too. My cousin in Toronto told me a bout them when I went to visit and I said “yeah, lots of jobs if you want to work a min wage fast food job.”

    What a joke.

  7. I moved back to NS from TO and actually got paid more here, not by very much and after tax it was actually a little less. but here I can actually afford a house in while in TO I would have had to pay 3 times the amount.

  8. Spot on, OP. Spot on.

I have two jobs, but I still believe people when they claim that it’s difficult to find even a menial job.

  9. Some people aspire to do more than just work at Mcd’s or a call centre… just saying. I agree with the OP.

  10. I think it depends on what experience and what education you have for sure while moving back here. A LOT of people I know go away to get experience and then come back here once they’ve got some. Since there’s an oversaturation of university grads here, it’s hard to get your foot in the door so you have to go away and then come back.

And totally agree with the housing prices…just to see some of the dumps they’re offering for RENT in TO at the prices they’re being offered for is scandulous!

  11. I was making decent money when I did return here but I was taken off “the books” due to unforeseeable circumstances and in regards to my resume; the contact information is correct, I am articulate, educated, well groomed/dressed and have a friendly demeanor. The expectations of employers of menial jobs is asinine in my opinion…with my free time I will stir the pot till it over flows..original poster of bitch

  12. You should read this book, it’s quite an eye-opener:

Backwater: Nova Scotia’s Economic Decline, it’s by Peter Moreira.

Sorry to hear about your predicament.

  13. Thank you Bill and Ben, will definitely look it up. It is just a bumpy road building more character, I thought my twenties were enough character building but I thought wrong.

  14. i concur with baz, it’s an excellent read. tho not particularly uplifting. hang in there mr. crash

  15. I kind of like it here (I moved here from BC) for some reason. People have been very kind. I hope you will find your way, OP.

  16. Hey, if you look to the right on this bitch board you will notice that Subway is hiring sandwich artists OP… you don’t even have to look any further! One stop shopping!

  17. more likely she’s charging. Wonder if she charges more than the chick in brandon’s tattoo pick posted earlier?? She seems the type… I like the dog, that’s cute!

  18. Sorry to disappoint, Tsar Ivan, but according to her profile, DaTiffi is apparently a lesbian. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that. *pulls out video camera*)

  19. You know WHAT? This is completely unrelated to any bitch on here, but I’d just like to state: I’m CRANKY today and wish I could punch someone in the face.

    The end.

  20. ahahaha that made me LOL, Ivan.

*sigh* you know what I need? A big hug, but I’m not about to ask my co workers for one. lol.

  21. I could use one too – or a major meltdown because I’m so frustrated with the INSANITY!!! Must be the weather bringing us down – that and assholes – eh, PK? Mental hugs to you.

  22. YOUR TOWN SUX<<< I wrote that BUT I did NOT write this bitch. It only SEEMS redundant because so many others have noticed. NOT MY FAULT. Fat, please please please GET OVER ME.

  23. My wife and I moved back here from TO 6 months ago. My mother-in-law is very ill and we wanted to be close to her.

I am making the same amount and my wife is making close to the same amount as in Ontario. However, our rent in Clayton Park for a condo is very similar to a downtown condo in TO (albeit for a much larger place), gas is more expensive, groceries are more expensive, cigs are more way expensive (yes I smoke, my wife doesn’t, can the comments), income taxes take way more off of my pay.

There’s no real multi-culturalism, bigotry runs rampant. Halifax, rather than trying to compete with bigger/better cities is worrying about keeping up with Moncton – a city with 1/4 or less population.

Barrington St. is dying/dead, the politicians are idiots (although Toronto did just elect Rob Ford, so I dunno I guess it’s a wash), and the lack of a downtown core due to sprawl is maddening (wtf, Timberlea has a ton of people now?).

How, exactly, is the quality of life better here?
