What other governments have undermined collective bargaining? Hmm, do the names Mussolini and Franco sound familiar? I wish they had courses on democracy at community college. —Those who remain ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it

  1. If the Libs stay in power, it means (among other things) the voters did not think the unions were so undermined. And democracy will be served.

If the PC or NDP form power it means the voters may (among other things) feel the unions were undermined. And democracy will be served.

Regardless of the outcome of the election, democracy will be served.

    Go poison your own well…

  2. Unions are the very definition of undermining the public interest.

Public sector unions aren’t fighting the government, they’re fighting the taxpayer. When you win, we lose. We, the taxpayer, lose every time you are up for “negotiation”, because up till now you were able to hold a gun to our heads and demand whatever you want. You got too greedy over the years, now the taxpayer has no choice but to fight back with legislation. This is a reaction to your prior actions, and had you been reasonable with your demands, you probably would have gotten them. The world is not YOUR oyster, it’s OURS, and a little humility will put you back in your place. Nobody wants to hear your bullshit!!!

  3. From what I can tell, after listening to an example of a union contract, is that unions are overpriced, contract negotiators. I know someone whose workplace just formed a small union and they were given a 2% increase over 4 years (not much I know). But then their new union takes away 1.3% in union dues, so the workers actually get a raise of less than 1% over 4 years. At my workplace (non union), your raise is based on performance, and since I don’t belong to a union I get to keep every cent of my 3% increase. Hmmm…I’ll keep my non union job where if I don’t like my working conditions I can leave.

I had no idea unions demanded indentured servitude…

  5. @ city mouse you know as well as I do union employees don’t leave their jobs, they want their golden pensions!
