Some people have mental retardation (intellectual disabilities). While mental retardation is not a bad word, when used to describe someone or something you think is bad or stupid it becomes another thoughtless hurtful word. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities are not bad. Their condition is not bad. The prejudice and discrimination to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is BAD…and WRONG! Please stop using the word ‘retard’. It hurts individuals and families of those with disabilities.
If not for those on here using the word, I would not have to post this. —Bitchers and Bitchees Please Be Advised, Stop the Hate

I suppose you’ll be calling for a full-scale boycott of these stores next , huh.

Fucking P.C. language police.
that bitch was retarded.
Anyone that uses the words gay or retarded to imply that something is uncool is flat out stupid and insensitive. It’s mostly high schoolers anyway, but every now and then I meet someone my age (mid-twenties) that STILL uses the words gay and retarded to describe something uncool. That’s so retardedly gay!
“You don’t call retarded people “retards”. That would be in bad taste. You call your friends “retards” when they’re acting retarded.” — the office (nbc)
I’m sorry but I agree with this bitch 110%.
I had a childhood friend who’s sister had a serious physical and mental disability (she passed away at the age of three) and my friend and her family were very hurt when those words were used in their presence. I learned this the hard way (after a family member got me onto using that word when it first because ‘cool’ to use it).
Knowing what hurt it does cause those with intellectual and even physical disabilities, I too get offended when someone uses that term. I know people don’t mean any harm, but still.
Who calls cognitively handicapped or learning disabled “mentally retarded” and then, in pretty much the same breath, bitches others out about the words they use??
Are you a time traveler OP? Maybe a bolt of lightening will send you back to 1985
And you didn’t HAVE to post anything. Freedom of speech means they can say what they want and you can ignore what YOU want, book-burner..
Ella, there are certain words that are inappropriate to use in this day and age. I know I don’t need to actually name those words as they are so barbaric that posts are deleted with those words in them. What I was trying to do was bring awareness to this board. Again, I know that most people know this, but the word is used on this site daily and I find it offensive. Not personally but in general.
I completely agree with this bitch. When you use words like “retard” and “gay” to describe something or someone you either don’t like or think is stupid, you come across ignorant. Do you not have the ability to come up with something a little more intelligent?
” “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretzky “
– Michael Scott, Michael Scott Paper Co
OP. I’m guessing it was my “retard” comment from the other day wasn’t it?
I agree with this poster. I think people should be more considerate. There is no need to use these words and it is offensive.
hmmmm, retard, as in stop, slow down, or stunt the movement of something. yep, seems pretty clear to me.
retarded simply means slow. i don’t see the problem. maybe I’m just a little retarded.
If that is what it means then…why don’t you just say slow instead?
sometimes I do.
It is very easy apparently to be rude and sometimes obnoxious in an online world. Wonder how rude you are in public in your real world and life?
it is very easy for me to express myself both online and in person and I fare quite well, thank you. i think it’s laughable that you think my comments on this topic are rude. i have to assume you feel that way because my position on the issue doesn’t align with yours.
Yes they do Zilla, that word has been removed for a reason. Because it is derogatory. Most don’t use it any more, including the comedians that made it famous. It is only ignorant people who use it these days. Just like the word that this post is about. IGNORANCE. It is also rude. But the people that use that word are ignorant. Plainly and truthfully.
here it is, for all the world to see, well maybe just the bitchers.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ret…
I’ll admit, in my circle of friends the words gay, fag and sometimes retarded get thrown around. I had a co worker in her 50s that used to use “retarded” a lot. It always kind of irked me, but I reserve the right to say whatever I want in my own place, I don’t go around in public talking like that.
However it’s not a good habit to get into. This past fall on my trip to Montreal we got there a few hours before we were able to check into our hotel room. We went to a family friend of mine’s place to hang out for a bit. This friend happens to be a gay man. I don’t think my friend knew this
We were discussing Peter Kelly and one of my friends said that he “looked like a little fruit” I kind of felt bad that my friend used a semi-homophobic slur in front of my gay friend. I never said anything, I don’t think he really took offense to it, but some people would have. Kind of makes you think though, all the times that word has been thrown around, you never know who might have had a gay/mental or physically challenged friend or family member who may have been really put off.
On one hand yes, people shouldn’t use these words but on the other hand, people ARE going to use them inevitably and they’re just words and we shouldn’t let them get us all bent out of shape. I’ll try and be more considerate OP.
Good post Tommy. I would have totally expected you to talk about the right to free speech. I am proud of you 🙂
Where did your post go Tommy? I received it in email but I don’t see it here? I w a s …so proud.
maybe because it had some bad words in it Robyn? eh.. glad someone got to read it.
The coast might be kind of sensitive to a certain homophobic slur in light of recent events involving a rusty SUV driver and a certain donair enthusiast.
Well that is too bad because it was really good. Bird you could have just edited it a little.
I do believe in the right of free speech, and people DO have the right to use these words, that’s indisputable. That’s why it’s up to us as a society to educate people on why they shouldn’t, as opposed to scolding them. The fact is though, if you are a minority, this stuff comes with the territory and I would hope that people not let words get them bent out of shape.
eh.. I’m just moody. Don’t be sorry, your trolling was pretty funny.
Zills, I have seen it and heard it. Plenty.
I just recall that in the last couple of years particularly, and I am talking about the other word now, people have stopped saying that. They got some reverend or something to ask everyone to stop using the word and it worked! It isn’t in mainstream culture anymore. Not movies and not radio music. It is a good thing too. Now the only people who use it are, well, ignorant people. And the fact that people on this Bitch board don’t use that word, is because people in general are trainable. We can learn not to offend people.
Most people feel the same about the word in the title of this bitch. It isn’t about freedom of speech, it is about not hurting people in this world of hurt.
right^^
The “r word?” as it shall perhaps henceforth be known is not used anymore in mainstrea culture, and the n word is used by a pretty small minority of the black population, especially here in Canada.
I agreed with that
THINKING ABOUT PREJUDICE, DISCRIMINATION, AND LANGUAGE
“The (sic) prejudice and discrimination to (sic) people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is (sic) BAD… and WRONG!”
The poster does not appear to distinguish between the three elements contained in the statement. There is prejudice, then there is discrimination and then there is language that is either prejudicial or discriminatory or both. The poster also fails to distinguish between “bad” and “wrong.”
I can be prejudiced and use prejudicial language but, while both are “bad” in the sense that such use flouts conventional propriety, neither is wrong understood as being unlawful or immoral. Inner psychological states (prejudice) and the corresponding public use of language are not subject to state censorship. Freedom of speech is a foundation of our society. Prejudice and prejudicial language can be seen as “immoral” only in a weak sense. The person offended has no legal recourse since no actionable damage can be demonstrated.
With discrimination however, we emerge from the realm of psychological states and language usage to overt action. Discrimination, unlike prejudice and prejudicial language, is therefore both bad and wrong.

For me they will always be retarded.
Or mentally retarded…its what it was called when I was growing up & what’s that saying…”A rose by any other name would…. “
THat’s how it works in my brain, but you can call it mentally handicapped, or mentally disabled, mentally challenged, special needs or differently abled !
Whatever floats your boat, & helps you get through the day.
its all just frosting on the exact same cake !
I’m going to keep using the word retarded around my friends, but I don’t go around laughing behind a disabled person’s back or yelling it in public. I’m a foul-mouthed person and say far worse things.
you know something that worries me a lot? they say we have this thing called free speech in this country, if so, why are there banned wwords, and words that we should never say. is it because it offends someone?
is it because it is derogatory? is it because we are above all that? i really don’t fucking know any more. these words being banned, outlawed or whatever, are akin to being told not to think for oneself.
yeah i know, they hurt some people’s feelings, but what about kike, jewbie, douchebag, asshole, shithead, and a whole fucking dictionary of other words. come on people, aren’t we all bigger than that. oops, sorry to use that word too, as it might refer to a segment of our society, that are overweight. see what i mean.
george orwell wasn’t too far off the spot, just the wrong year for the THOUGHT POLICE, AND MORALITY SQUADS. let’s just live our fucking lives, and do what the fuck, we have been doing since the days of the dinosaurs, being human. never mind all this politically correct bullshit. to me, you are just a pretentious asshole, for trying to change a world, that really doesn’t want to change.
dn’t get me wrong here, i don’t go calling someone a name or whatever, it just isn’t me. but let’s all stop trying to do ths righteous bullshit, and just try to live our lives, with one another, without killing each other. now some thin skinned people will start to deride what i’m saying, and hey, under the canadian constitution, that is your right. just like it is every canadian’s right, to freedom of speech, expression, and thought. without these ideals, we become a controled state of mindless robots or slaves to the machine, that is called purity and goodness. and we all don’t want that, do we? whew, that was too fucking long, even for me.

Language changes. Today, we say ‘developmentally delayed’ or ‘developmentally disabled’ rather than retarded, which has become a pejorative, as has the word SPED (short for special education).
In fact, the word retarded was coined to replace earlier words such as idiot and moron— they were retired as diagnoses after they became pejoratives themselves.

Ah, that didn’t take long, did it Hugo? I knew you would rise to the bait and was expecting you. As we all know, Hugo does his usual thing, sneering and defamation, but now let’s see how he responds to the following:
As we also all know, Hugo is enraged that I have five degrees including a Ph.D. and he doesn’t. It’s as simple as that. So, in order to bring me “down” what he wants to do is to accuse me of plagiarism in respect to Darwin’s “The Voyage of the Beagle.” Now Hugo, plagiarism is a very serious charge and not to be taken lightly. It requires, as a consequence, a very high threshold of evidence. If that is lacking Hugo, you are open to charges of defamation. If this were a court of law and not simply a social site, you would be hailed into court if you failed to establish your case. You do understand that, don’t you Hugo? (Indicate “yes” by nodding your head.) So let’s start:
For your charge of plagiarism to go through, Hugo, you must demonstate – yes, DEMONSTRATE – the following:
1. You must specify precisely – that’s PRECISELY, Hugo – what your charge of plagiarism is. Rhetoric is insufficient here, Hugo. Sneering is not enough. You must DEMONSTRATE your claim specifically, by direct quotation which you attribute to me.
2. You must then, Hugo, specify by direct and correct quotation from “The Voyage of the Beagle” that DEMONSTRATES that I am factually incorrect, that my reference to “The Voyage of the Beagle” was wrong. You must cite the quotation and page reference, Hugo. Rhetoric and sneering, once again, are insufficient.
3. Finally Hugo, and perhaps this will be the most most diffcult part for you, you must DEMONSTRATE that I INTENTIONALLy DECEIVED THE READERS. This is not an option, Hugo. You must DEMONSTRATE willful deceit on may part. You do understand this, don’t you Hugo? (Indicate that you do by nodding your head.)
Take your time, Hugo. Reflect on your words. I will be waiting.
A pleasure as always.

I really don’t see how words like retard, gay, etc. etc. serve to enrich conversation. In my estimations they only serve to make the user look like a simple plonker.

“MM Y U NO propose to Hugo yet?”
Well, Donk, I just came back and discovered that there is no sign of Hugo. That does make it difficult to propose, doesn’t it. Do you think he’s being coy? Do you think he’s playing hard to get? Or, as is more probably the case, he’s trying to engage step 1 of my tripartite requirements, i.e., to precisely specify the nature of his charge against me.
Between ourselves Donk, after all this is over, I might just pop the question.

Hugo – you have a real talent for demotivational images and avatars. I’m loving it.
and now we come full circle with this little gem I’d forgotten all about….http://www.wimp.com/philosophergame/
What’s this banned word? The little something from the Dire Straits song that owns a jet airplane and is a millionaire. That song, I believe, has generated a lot a controversy for the use of that word. Although, in essence, it’s being used in third person to describe a redneck’s view of somebody with artistic sensibilites.
My feeling towards words like retard and such is that they are used as insults at the expense of certain individuals with cognitive disabilities. Those people are born with this trait and have no control over it. When one uses this word in a derogatory sense, you have to ask yourself why? The fact is an insult is used show that you’re better than the target or try to make the target feel that way. If you use a word that traditionally describes certain disabled people as an insult, you feel you’re superior to them or they’re lower in status to the average citizen. In essence, a sense that they are a lower form of humanity.
That is the crux of why a lot of folks are sensitive to that word. We all know that “retarded” can apply to any number of things, it just means “slowed” or “curtailed” but it’s evolution in our culture has put a specific slant to it. For the free speech enthusiasts, thinking about what you say and how you say it isn’t a bad thing, it just means you’re a bit more civilized.

“I said that you fabricated a bullshit lie about Darwin being the first to discover the Galapagos Islands.”
Well, well, wouldn’t you know it? Hugo pops up just as I replied to Donk. As usual, however, Hugo is mistaken. It is a bit difficult and it seems that Hugo was just unable to grasp it.
My reference to Darwin and the Galapagos Islanders was in the context of the intentional nature of perception. When the Islanders saw the rowboats coming ashore they didn’t “see” the Beagle since they were not familiar with a vessel of that size. They were, however, with boats the size of rowboats. Indeed, the famous American pychologist William James deals with it in some depth in his “Principles of Psychology.” So Hugo is just wrong about my “bullshit lie.”
To establish this, let’s go back to Step 1 of my tripartite requirement that Hugo must satisfy: “DEMONSTRATE your claim specifically, by direct quotation which you attribute to me.” This means giving the date and time of that quotation from the relevant thread. And of course Hugo has to “prove” my intentions to establish knowing deceit on my part but that is Step 3 and we’re not even finished with Step 1.
His remarks about no_fool’s and my comments were both incoherent and irrelevant.
Did you notice his concluding remarks, Donk? While typical of Hugo, do you think that they “enriched” the conversation?
A pleasure as always.

Lie.
Noun:
1.The way, direction, or position in which something lies.
2.An intentionally false statement.
Yeah, the use of the word was much more accepted ‘back in the day.’ I can remember coaches yelling it to the teams.
I was listening to ‘Alice’s Restaurant’ in the car on Thanksgiving and was a little startled to hear Arlo say ‘it’ although lord knows, I’ve heard that song often enough…(“and if two people, TWO people walk up and start singin’ ‘you can get anything you want at Alice’s Restaurant’ they’ll think you’re both [derogatory term for gay men] and they won’t take either of you” (draft during Vietnam)
–Arlo’s a homeboy and his Shaggy Dog studios are not 30 kms give from both my hometown and where I reside now. Now Arlo’s not what you’d call a hater, and although I’ve heard the modernized version too, I can’t remember but I’m pretty sure it’s not the [derogatory term for homosexual men] but you can’t deny he said it then. Q.E.D.

i get that some words shouldn’t be said, but everyone in this day and age are overly sensitive to words, and trying to put together a sentence is like walking on politically correct eggshells.
“The Bullshit Lie” (II)
Hugo Phurst (Feb. 18, 4:59PM)
“Lie: An intentionally false statement.”
As expected Hugo has failed to satisfy Step I of my three-part requirement to enable his charge that I uttered a “Bullshit Lie” to go through, i.e., “DEMONSTRATE your claim specifically, by direct quotation which you attribute to me.” If Hugo thinks his dictionary definition satisfies Step I, then I have serious doubts about his intelligence.
These doubts are increased on the basis of his definition itself which, including the word “intentionally,” formed the basis of my Step 3: “DEMONSTRATE that I intentionally deceived the readers.” In other words, Hugo must be in possession of my intentions (to deceive) which he, self-contradictingly, denies (Feb. 18, 3:46PM). But I don’t suppose Hugo understands this either, for Hugo is a driven man.
As I mentioned before, all of this boils down to Hugo’s resentment that I have a Ph.D. and he doesn’t. Simple as that. All he can do, as a result, is just sneer at the Ph.D. But why is Hugo so driven, so resentful? In my view his resentment is the product of an over-blown ego coming into contact with minimal intellectual attainment. The result, unfortunately is that Hugo is just a bitter man who can only impotently sneer. But, of course, that is his problem and let him deal with it.
But readers may be wondering what all this has to do with Darwin, the Galapagos Islands, and the Beagle. I have no interest at all in the Galapagos Islands and very little in Darwin and the Beagle, so why would I “lie” about Darwin discovering the Galapagos? You better ask Hugo. But I do have considerable interest in the process of thinking, a process which mirrors the process of perception. That was the context of my reference to Darwin and the Galapagos Islands.
In his “Personal Knowledge: Towards a Post-Critical Philosophy” Michael Polanyi – a world-famous scientist (crystallography) and philosopher of the process of knowing who, incidentally, provided the background theory for my Ph.D. thesis (sneer again, Hugo) – wrote in respect to Darwin and the Galapagos Islanders that they “wondered at the small boats but paid no attention to the big ship lying at anchor in front of them.” The Beagle, in other words, was not part of their “perceptual framework” and so did not register on their “conceptual framework.” They had no questions to ask about it.
This is my sole reference to the Galapagos Islands and Darwin and had no relation as to who or when they were discovered. But I suppose Hugo, in spite of his failing to understand my point, will also sneeringly dismiss Polanyi as just uttering another “bullshit lie.” That is breathtaking but remember, sneering is all Hugo has.
So, Hugo, take another shot at Step I. You remember, the one that says, “DEMONSTRATE your claim specifically by direct quotation which you attribute to me.”

Smeagol posted – “the natives of the Galapagos Islands is instructive. They had no trouble recognizing the small rowing boat that put off from Darwin’s ship “The Beagle” to come ashore since they themselves used canoes. However, they failed to recognze The Beagle itself. They didn’t even “see” it. For them, The Beagle had no “reality.”
Hugo – “The natives of the Galapagos Islands – No such thing. There is/was no indigenous population in the Galapagos, AND, the Spanish were already there when Darwin arrived.”
Smeagol – “Charles Darwin – “The Voyage of the Beagle.” 1839. (pp. 40-43)”.
Another fabricated “fact”, another lie.

First, complete Step 1: Give the name of the Bitch, the date and the time of the reference so we can all see it. In any case you know as well as I do that by the “natives” I was referring to the non-European inhabitants of the Galapagos Islands. Contrary to what you maintain, this wasn’t a “lie.” You don’t give a hoot about the Galapagos but you are insanely jealous of my Ph.D. which continues to torment you deeply. It was always the motivation for your absurd comments.
If the reference to the Voyage of the Beagle as being “another lie,” then prove it. Use specific page references. I recalled Polanyi as I was writing the comment. It was not a direct reference so no citation was required.
(12:52PM)
I have no anger toward you, Hugo, just boredom. Your homosexual comment is more like the real sneering you. What a slimeball.

But… where does it end? What if i say “That storm was crazy!”? What happens to the sensibilities of psychotic people?
What if someone is offended by someone else saying “Jesus christ!” because they’re religious? Granted religion is a choice. But of course, crazy is not (pardon me, sanity-impaired)
Or.. are the sensibilities of some more important than the sensibilities of others?
“Or.. are the sensibilities of some more important than the sensibilities of others?”
Bingo. Those who evangelize the gospel of Political Correctness don’t even try to hide this inconvenient truth. In fact, they’re often downright smug about it. Screw ’em.

I’m not taking sides in this battle of bitch posts between MM and Hugo. I’m not trying to discredit any of MM’s or Hugo’s previous comments nor am I trying to wade into ‘who said what to whom, when’ debate. I AM, however, simply posting factual information that I have found with regards to the settlement or habitation of the Galapagos Islands. You can do with it as you please.
“European discovery of the Galápagos Islands occurred when Spaniard Fray Tomás de Berlanga, the fourth Bishop of Panama, sailed to Peru to settle a dispute between Francisco Pizarro and his lieutenants. De Berlanga’s vessel drifted off course when the winds diminished, and his party reached the islands on 10 March 1535. According to a 1952 study by Thor Heyerdahl and Arne Skjølsvold, remains of potsherds and other artifacts from several sites on the islands suggest visitation by South American peoples prior to the arrival of the Spanish. However, no remains of graves, ceremonial vessels and constructions have ever been found, suggesting no permanent settlement occurred at the time.”
“The first known permanent human resident on Galapagos was Patrick Watkins, an Irish sailor who was marooned on the Island Floreana from 1807–1809.”
“The first governor of Galápagos, General José de Villamil, brought a group of convicts to populate the island of Floreana, and in October 1832, some artisans and farmers joined them.”

“”natives” I was referring to the non-European inhabitants of the Galapagos Islands” – You keep displaying your ignorance and lack of knowledge, as I posted before the Galapagos Islands have no indigenous peoples, therefore NO NATIVES. Fucking clue in, you moron.
When you first posted it, you claimed that it was an excerpt from Darwin’s, Voyage of The Beagle , you even gave a reference (which was false, of course). Now you’re claiming that it’s from Polanyi’s, Personal Knowledge: Towards a Post-Critical Philosophy, well guess what, I couldn’t find a word of the supposed quote. How about you provinding an exact reference? Believe me when I say, I’ll check it out.
So, which is it, Darwin or Polanyi, or (more likely) that you just made it up?
