I was disgusted but not surprised to see the “fuck gentrification” graffiti on an establishment at the corner of North and Agricola, as I was to see “We’ll support the troops when they mutiny” on the side of a building on the corner of Almon and Gladstone this week. So much for respecting independent business and people who died for out freedom. So, to the dirt bag, socialist scum of the North End, here is a message from a hard working writer and member of the arts community: You can’t afford it. This isn’t your home anymore, and it never will be again. —Disgusted Member of the Arts Community

  1. Socialist: someone who cares about justice and his/her fellow citizen.

NE spraypainters: rebels without a clue.

  2. “Disgusted but not surprised”. Could not have phrased it better myself OP. I have two friends who run their own businesses in that part of town. One had his window smashed for the 2nd time a month ago and another had her premises defaced with black spray paint. Politicized vandals are still nothing but common criminals and deserve to be treated as such. Maybe someone should spray paint “I’ll respect Anarchists when they clean up their own shit” on the side of a squat or indie comic store.

  3. Haha… ya, I can’t see these as political messages. They’re just some ‘tards with a spray can. It’s awful. Criminals – I agree completely.

/cue TTFN’s description of what she’ll do with said paint can….

  4. Just because these tards use grafitti and vandalism to “fuck gentrification”, they’re not lefties or socialists or whatever. They’re fucking assholes who are damaging the property of hardworking people/business owners.
To the guy who said in here awhile back that they are keeping the property values down on purpose as a political statement: fuck you.
You’re just a vandal and an asshole. I hope some of these small business owners or property owners catch you and spray paint the inside of your asshole.

  5. oH oH Let me try.
    Ahem Hhhm.
“These little shit-tards need to have their lazy pimply arses introduced to my steel-toed Jimmy Choo workboots so hard their arse-apples dangle from their snot-slingers!”

    Howze dat TT?

  6. I am not condoning vandalism or stupid slogans… but OP your take on it shows that you are a snotty ass piece of sht with your head extremely far up your ass. Do you expect people to react well to comments/ attitudes like, “you can’t afford it, this isn’t your home anymore,” about a neighbourhood where they and their parents grew up??? Seriously?? If you walk around with a ‘bow down and make way for me’ attitude YOU are aggravating this whole situation, just as much as people on the other extreme. Do you think you can push people around and not get pushed back? Not realistic. But maybe it sounds right to pathetic self-entitled fcktards like yourself

  7. OP wrote:

“You can’t afford it. This isn’t your home anymore, and it never will be again.”

in response to the slogan “fuck gentrification” spray painted on a local building.

There is a certain symmetry here.

I don’t condone vandalism, but gentrification has its downside as well as its upside, and I think the OP unintentionally gave voice to that downside.

I don’t know the circumstances of that particular location, but when affordable, low income housing is bulldozed to make way for expensive condos and high end restaurants, where are the folks who “can’t afford it” supposed to go?

  8. Exactly, thewons. Both parties involved in this bitch are douchebags to a certain extent.

  9. Actually , this sign is for this development:

    http://www.thecoast.ca/halifax/constructio…

    http://gottingenterrace.ca/index.html

You can actually see the sign in the background of the Coast article.

Which is affordable housing mix on an empty lots. Come on, folks! The other building that they’re tearing down are also aimed at mixed income levels and they’re going up in place of disgusting condemned buildings.

I agree – OP’s attitude is that of asswipe. I like that neighbourhood, I live nearby, and there’s no reason that it can’t be mixed. Developers ARE trying hard to make it that way. “this isn’t your home anymore”, someone maybe should shove the steel toed Jimmy Choos up yer arse.

But I think OP is trolling…

  10. Maybe the OP could clear up what was meant. Was it actual socio-economic exclusion or were they speaking metaphorically about the vandals abrogating both their so-called political ideals as well as their own rights to the community by “shitting in their own nest”
P.S. OP – most socialists, however cavalier they may be about the private property of others turn pretty damned neo-con, pretty damned quick when their own is jeopardized.

  11. LOL…someone’s jealous they can’t afford the properties richer folks buy up. Hopefully the poor punks remember that the spray paint can nozzle points away from their eyes.

  12. I agree with the OP. I don’t think he was trying to be snobby. A person who’s going to vandalize a disrespect a neighbourhood has no business calling it their home.

  13. well duh, some of these little douches consider that art too. maybe you are bitching because it looks better than the shit you turn out?
and what the fuck is wrong with a socialist society? beats the shit out of what we have going here now. dog eat dog, fuck your friends and neighbours, get more than anyone else, pure fucking greedy son bitches.
and oh yeah, don’t get me started on the corrupt fucking polititions.

  14. I’m with Lifer. Under Capitalism man exploits his fellow man. Under Socialism it’s the other way around. >: )

  15. ralmn,

From what the OP indicated, the “fuck gentrification” graffiti is on a building at the corner of North and Agricola, not the location you linked to.

I think I know which building got hit and it ain’t the pub or the Middle Eastern grocery store.

  16. Haha – thanks CE – I automatically mentally flipped to that sign, because I’ve seen those exact words in black spray paint on them. I’m sure I’ll see it on my run tonight. Boo.

  17. Under Capitalism, man exploits his fellow man.
Under Socialism, man fellow his exploits man … ?

or… oh, you meant… oh ok.

  18. These aren’t socialists…just suburban hipsters with zero understanding of urban issues. Certain articles in the Coast tend to egg them on.

  19. As a life long resident of the North End and someone who has watched my community get destroyed by these people this is what I think and feel. They are terrorists, pure and simple. They terrorize the working class, small business owners, mom and pop shops. They NEVER spray paint the south end, or big business, only the hard working, the vulnerable, the powerless. We are then forced to live like we are in a war zone with branding everywhere. It is a hate crime, imo, and they should be jailed as such. BUT we live in NS where criminals have free reign, and people can terrorize a whole community with impunity.

  20. totally agree with your disgust about gentrification..shake my head at you thinking that troops in Afgh. are dying for our “freedom” no..not so much..

  21. If the property owner hasn’t given the OK to tag the property, then fuck you vandals.

  22. I have to walk past the “”We’ll support the troops when they mutiny” on Gladstone St everyday and it always upsets me trek to work.

These need to be painted over as quickly as possible or else the people who did it will have some form of satisfaction from it.

  23. ope you all like me new picture ducks? i just ad a very ard day, and decided to cook up some naughty bits.

  24. I’d take a picture of the graf about the soldiers doing a mutiny because I can agree. But, I hate cheap graf shit and tagging so I’m torn.

  25. And here I though it was “all animals are creaated equa but some animals are more equal than others”.

  26. I’d like to differentiate between low-income and scum. Many many people in these neighborhoods are there not because they love the swarmings, vandalism, theft, and turf wars. They can’t afford better since our property values are so fucked and they get all the shitbags as a bonus.

I wonder how many of these graffiti asshats actually tag their own neighborhood? If a person does graffiti, they should be made to clean it and then contribute to the payments on the property or something so that it is their own property they are defacing. Bet that shit would stop pretty quick…

  27. Agreed Guyute. I seriously doubt that any of the “political” spray-paint vandals are actually born and bred north-enders or particularly low income. I’m thinking Poli-sci 101 anarchists and dropout stoners whose disgust with capitalism stems from society’s refusal to pay them to get high and sleep till noon.

  28. Yup, I called that one right Lifer. Do you have a spicy one of Diana? Or as Camilla once said “Chuck & Di, Chuck & Di. Get over it people. He chucked her and she…” >: 0

  29. …yeah but he could open bottles of Smithwicks with those glutes. (and probably has)

  30. I’m waiting for him to smother his mother in her sleep.

Also after he left the “I’d like to be your tampon msg” it solidified him as a witless minger in my mind. A real dim cunt.

  31. He is a salutary warning of the dangers of multi-generational inbreeding, to be sure.

  32. haha, good ol jug ears. at least james cromwell gave him a little personality

  33. yes commander the bear just pointed that out^^ah fuck em all, bloody sassanachs. where’s your empire now? “i didn’t vote for you”
