What do you do with a problem that everyone is responsible for, but no one wants to commit to? Most people forget about it, but plastic accumulation is a growing issue that will soon be difficult to ignore. Focused on climate change this catastrophe is usually pushed aside and hidden from the public. However, this is not a new issue nor should people be surprised by it. Practically everything we own is made of plastic. All of which eventually ends up in the sea, one way or another. Today, nearly a quarter of our oceans is covered in plastic! But who is responsible? Whose fault is it that ingested plastic is suffocating thousands of marine animals to death? Everyone, I say, from the biggest manufactures, to every person who throws away plastic. Even you, it’s time we find ways to reduce, reuse and recycle. —Natasha Mintenko

  1. We have found ways to recycle. We do recycle.
Does everyone? Of course not. But that’s life. Selfishness will always excist.

  2. Been listening to this shit for so long, I’ve gone deaf. So tired of people who suddenly discover what’s wrong with the world & take it upon themselves to ‘educate’ the rest of us. Why don’t you rag on the manufacturers of plastics instead?

  3. 1/4 of our oceans *ARE covered in plastic? All plastic ends up in the sea? Look, there’s an issue with plastic and ocean pollution. But hyperbole will turn people off it real quick.

  4. Is OB a sales rep for Crappy Tire Paper recycle bags they sell us all PLUS TAX?
People only care if they are making money off it.
Try giving refunds or “deposits” like drinking bottles, same with Tim’s cups and watch how fast the litter disappears(not all but most). Especially in NS where 90% of its citizens live pay to pay sure could use an extra 5 or 10 bucks for bread and milk.

You need a better plan than just bitching in the Coast about it. MONEY TALKS!….and that is a shame but it would work for most litter. Pay people for their returned litter……PROBLEM SOLVED!

  5. Let’s be gentle, people.
OP is probably 13 and in the top social awareness percentile at Shambollocks School.
And admittedly, the world is becoming a very scary place, so let us nurture and mentor, rather than condemn her.
Natasha, I find a hobby is a very good outlet for dealing with the stresses of day to day life.
I build Airfix 1/72 scale models of WWII tanks and aircraft.
May you find your way as pleasant.

  6. Some plastics are 100% recyclable which makes them a great asset for those that want to reduce waste, reuse and recycle.

  7. “…nearly a quarter of our oceans is covered in plastic!”

I’ve told you a million times not to exaggerate…

  8. Hey OP, maybe you shouldn’t have a computer or phone. Our technology is one of the biggest pollutants, you goddamn hypocrit.

  9. Yet another lecture on our collective sins – administered by a pious priestess standing high above us on her pulpit.

  10. ^^^ Sorry. That was a little harsh of me. It’s just that lecturing people turns them off.
The problem of ocean pollution is well known. The good news is that there are some innovative things being done to clean it up and prevent future problems. Most waste enters the ocean through harbours and rivers so there is an opportunity to prevent it. Sea drones are one innovative solution that is being tested. The technology could eventually be used to clean up the mass of plastic floating in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
