I work at a very small and very popular food establishment in central Halifax. Today someone decided to leave a very long and very crummy note in our suggestion box, shaming us for the clothes we wear and our overall appearance. I’m sorry the two inches of our server’s midsection was so offensive that you simply could not order and had to leave. You missed out on some of the best costumer service the city has to offer.
You went on to say that when you decided to give us another chance and came back, you were served by a well dressed young man, and then congratulated us on finally hiring a male employee. That comment was the WORST! We love our sole male coworker, but is it really so appalling to see a shop employ 99 percent women? I’m very lucky to work for a woman who takes pride in intentionally hiring women, and also takes pride in the individuality of her staff.

I don’t care about tats or hair colour but I hafta admit that lots of exposed flesh and food service aren’t a good combination. It’s inching a little too close to a naked stranger handing me a plate of grub. Not good!! 🙂
Seriously though, the main thing is that your employer is trying to make a living and is providing you employment. Small businesses run on tight margins. Every customer counts. You do owe it to the owner to put some effort into not chasing customers away – even ones that are more conservative than you. And, I don’t think wearing a normal T-shirt to work is too much of a burden to bear.
You take pride in sexist hiring practices??
“We love our soul male coworker, but is it really so appalling to see a shop employ 99 percent women?”
Lets just change it around for fun.

Wouldn’t you be appalled OB? Me thinks you would.
smiths?
On second thought, it’s kinda funny that the OB saw the comment in the first place. I’d have thunk the suggestion box would be for the owner’s eyes only – unless she wanted to point out something needing to change. Not sure why the OB would be seeing an unflattering comment if nothing was expected of her. This all sounds a bit odd.
