To our summer student: You are here to work! You are not here to carry your iPhone around and text your friends. You are not to duck into a meeting room and call a friend unless it is urgent. You are not to disappear from the office for 1.5 hours without alerting your supervisor. Quit whining, you were given a great opportunity in a domain you are currently studying. You have burned all bridges you have with us because you will not stop complaining. You don’t complete work assigned unless we hound you. You are so self-righteous and entitled. Take your silver platter and begone! Because of you, we will likely not get funding for another student next year. Thank you for ruining a great opportunity for struggling students! —Person who has been stuck trying to stick some work ethic in your head all summer

“in a domain you are currently studying” …. really? DOMAIN? WTF
No wonder the chick is hiding.
Her future is going to be stellar op. Just stellar.. You’ll see… She’ll show you…
haha… You all have my deepest sympathy. Thank god my “domain” can only afford to bring on interns who aren’t total airheads..
Please do not give this moron credit. DO NOT sign her internship papers. And don’t let this deter you from hiring interns in the future. Most of them are really eager to prove how capable they are. Most are not like this waste of time.
If they don’t have work ethic by the time they are in university or college…chances are you won’t be able to drill that into them over a summer…
Though the person is a tool, where does it say it’s a HER?
You know even though the OB is talking about a summer student, there are plenty of people out there with this work ethic. No wonder businesses are trying to import foreign workers. At least they don’t yak on the phone. They actually do something called work.
I prefer to use “her” as the blanket gender pronoun and not “him”. “Them” just sounds all multiple personality-ish.
Next April you’re TOTALLY going to get a call asking if this person can use you as a reference, OB.
Say yes. Oh GOD say yes and dish it. *evilcackle*
Take a closer look at your HR person and ask them how they managed to hire such a piece of shit? It could be, because HR are usually just clueless idiots who couldn’t find any other job and love the power trip they hold as gatekeepers within a company. The kid is probably related to or knows one of them.
You know this kid is hooked up via family in some fucking way. That’s how it works.
Looks like you got stuck with a wonderful Pee Yarr student, OB. I feel for ya.
This person must be hired at your place of business. All work places have one of these types of employees.
Has this person been sat for some sort of review? Maybe they need some set deadlines instead of hounding. Can you fire a summer student? If so, do it. Good learning experience for them.
Wow I would have fired her.
Not necessarily Cranky. Some people are VERY good interviews but very poor employees. Nailing an interview can be hard for most of us but this person may have that rare talent of bullshitting in just the right way.
You can have a ton of theoretical knowledge – that’s what an internship interview is looking to find out. Whether or not you can apply that knowledge or even feel like doing so? That’s a different story.
Gotta wonder though how someone like this even earned the grades necessary to get to this point.. Again, all signs point to stellar bullshitter in an arts or humanities degree (and arts people, keep your panties on… I’m just saying it’s easier to bullshit than maths, sciences or technologies where if it doesn’t light up, it doesn’t light up. You can’t bullshit your way around that.)
Que Ironico. I’m writing this at work. Gotta get back to my ditamap.
We had one – she quit… found it too “difficult”… fucking stooooooopid one too…
I would have killed for a summer job in my field…
all my summer jobs were nightmares.
You no what is so great about all the worthless young people that are trying to join the work force . (Because we are having real problems getting workers not just to do the work , but to actually stay at it) FYI newbies start in the $18 dollar range
One there are a few really motivated hard workers amongst the herd of lazy know it alls. But what’s great is the employers out there are coming to the realization that without us old experienced bastards they’ d be up shit creek with no paddles , in a sinking boat !
Job security in a contracted position … Feels good ~ : )
