I know people like this and they normally share an apartment with a bunch of other punks. They panhandle and other bullshit, then party at night. Most of them just don’t FEEL like working so I have sympathy for them.
I was berated by one on Quinpool just last week. After I came out of Canadian Tire. He asked for change, I said ‘sorry man’. And then he went on about how he knows nothing comes to an even dollar and I must have some change. I started to walk away and he shouted at me all the way down the block!

I love when you just straight up tell a bum “no” rather than “sorry” when they ask you for change. Really, why should I be sorry? I don’t usually do this in Halifax since I know I’ll have to see them again and don’t want a confrontation, but I’ve done this in other cities before with mixed results. One time I very nearly got beaten up… I told this guy no, then buddy said “why not!” to which I responded “because it’s my fucking money and I don’t want to give you any of it!” He starts walking towards me wanting to fight (“come back and say that to my fucking face motherfucker!”), but being the big man I am, I quickly keep walking away.

You know what *I’ve* always believed? Most people treat others how they’re treated by them. Case in point: everyone says Ontarioians are assholes…well, I lived in Ontario and was as friendly as I always am and they were always very nice and warm in return. And whenever I’ve been in Toronto, I’ve found those around me have treated me quite well because I’m *gasp* friendly and outgoing.
