It’s bad enough that there are homeless people EVERYWHERE in this city, but more than half of them don’t even bother asking for change. They just shake their cup at you as you go by. It’s bad enough they’re begging, but they can’t even bother to ask? And for some reason, I still feel compelled to refuse politely. It’s a quandary.

Why are there so many homeless people in this city, anyway?

  1. Well, half of them aren’t even homeless, they just say they are. Yes, there is also poverty, but there are ways to help themselves, they just can’t be bothered. Its easier to sit on their ass and beg and get tax free money. Oh, and OP, don’t forget the ones that use poor puppies and dogs to guilt you into giving them money to feed their poor animal.I have no problem giving to change to someone playing an instument, or asking me politely, but to not even open your mouth and just shake a cup at me??? FUCK YOU. You’re to lazy to open your fucking mouth, I’m too lazy to reach into my pocket.

  2. I have seen more than one of the Barrington bums up at Scotia Square buying booze or lotto tickets – excuse me if I don’t want to support the habits of some cup rattling twat looking for a free ride. Fuck you, squared.

  3. What I find unbelievable is how many times you’ll here someone say ” Sorry” or some lame excuse about only having debit, why feel obligated to them???? WHAT DID YOU DO WRONG???Nothing!!!, so why assume and then accept blaim into your life, talk about creating negative energy.

  4. I say sorry because I’m acknoledging them as people. I may not have or want to give them cash, I may disagree with whatever they’re doing, but they’re still people, and if they take the time to ask me something, I’m not going to just walk by like they’re part of the scenery.

  5. Whats in-human about politley saying “No”??? I really couldnt give a fuck if my change was going towards crack or funding hate crimesbut if you dont have or more importantly DONT WANT to give away your money , you shouldnt feel Sorry that you feel that way.

  6. sorry I misread you travis…..I thought you were makign a comment about people who speak to them at all. my bad.I honestly don’t know- I’ve never really thought about it that way. I say sorry to the couple of peopel who I know are legitimately there who I occasionally give to, because I am legitimatly sorry I can’t give them somethign that day…maybe I just get in the habit of it?I still think a polite ‘no’ is preferable to the straight-ahead-stare and no-response so many people give panhandlers. at least that way you are acknoledging their existence……..know what I mean>?

  7. Personally I prefer when they don’t ask for change, because I’m not going to give them any either way, not because I think they’re scum or spending it on bad things, but because I need that $1 just as much as they do. If they say something, then I am obligated to say something back. If they don’t ask, I can just smile at them and keep going. And most of them are just as happy with a smile in their direction as they are with $1.

  8. exactly. it’s that human interaction stuff- doesn’t cost me a cent. I also think yeah, they do get a lot of abuse thrown their way. sometimes it’s deserved, I suppose, but I for one don’t think anyone deserves to be treated that poorly. especially if I can smile at them and say hello or whatever.

  9. If I gave everyone a dollar who asked me for one, I’d be homeless. Do I feel bad? No fuckin way. It’s not my job to feed you, I live in and grew up in the same mess of a world as you did, and nobody gave me a dime. Adjust and overcome bitches, don’t drag me down to pick you up. McDonald’s is always hiring, that’s a start. Correction… sell your pure breed pittbull, THAT’S a start. If I WAS completely rich and could afford to buy you a new wardrobe out of good will, I still wouldn’t. I’d give the money to a homeless shelter. At least then I know my good will is going to be supporting the pure, and truly defeated. Not some dickhead with $10,000 worth of pets, tattoos, and bad habits who can’t be bothered to get a life.

  10. poverty & homelessness are the hallmarks of an uncivilized and FAILED society. in a RICH country like Canada, there are NO rational excuses for ANYONE to be sleeping and/or starving in the streets.

  11. We all started poor. Correction, we created money and made a society based on money. Poor people really just stayed the same. For more information please subscribe to my newsletter
