Dear Boss Lady,
My Husband is too good of a guy to say anything, and cares too much about his family to jeopardize his job by speaking out, so because I love him dearly madly and truly, I will do it for him. He has worked his ass off for your company while you dangled a promotion over his head for a year that he has not only traveled for, but acted as filler in positions when other employees would quit. He bleeds for this job, and is the hardest working most loving man ever! He is honest to a tee. You told him he would have a raise this pay, along with his new management position, and he was excited, we both were given it’s the holiday season. We however were surprised to see despite his immense hours it was lower than usual. Also to discover the raise was just barely enough so that it could be deducted from his pay, leaving us with less than what we had before (Merry Christmas) and now he has to work twice as hard with the new position while you sit back, and get a pat on the back, and probably a bonus for saving the company money. Kudos. P.S. Good luck finding as good a guy as my husband to do your running for you when he finally leaves. —You Know Who You Are

He has a female boss – ‘nuf said?!
Not only did Boss Lady twist his balls ….. but wifey comes to bat on the b!tch board. I see substance abuse in his future.
And…
He’s fired.
Nicely done, Sweet Cheeks.
He hasn’t fucked her yet….that’s why he hasn’t gotten a significant raise or promotion.
Hubbie should tell the Dragon Twat to shove her job up her half-shaved minge. BUT only after he’s found something else. Surely, if he’s as great as you make him out to be, he could find another company to work for. Sounds like this fudgin’ cow sucked out his soul and spit it out like a grape seed.
Bad situation OP! Sorry! Those raises that bump you in to the next tax bracket are demoralizing to say the least. Good luck!
ya, I never quite got how that works…
if you’re in a higher tax bracket, isn’t just the extra it took to put you there taxed under the higher %?
ie 0-20K is x%
20-40K is y%
say I make 25K, isn’t it taxed at (20*x) + (5*y) ?
that’s how it was always explained to me…
and means you should never make less take home when getting a raise?
(if you’re ever even lucky enough to get one these days)
I think you’re right zZz. Maybe the problem is this:
A 5 % increase on dick all is still dick all!
If you have blessings to count, folks, count them!
eh.. the boss sounds like a bitch but I’m sure she didn’t plan it purposely that the increase would bump him into a different tax bracket and actually decrease his take home pay. Blame Canada Revenue if you want to blame someone.
Maybe she wants a 3 some?
Matter fact, I take that back. Nothing in this bitch indicates that the boss has done anything bitch worthy. You’re just mad that his hard work results in lower net pay. Your anger is misdirected. She isn’t “saving the company money”. The company is still paying out more money, he just has to pay a higher percentage of it in taxes. I deal with people like you all the time at work. I work in payroll. We have to abide by CRA regulations. Get bent.
P.S. Taxable benefits are taxable, just because you owe the CRA money at the end of the year doesn’t mean we haven’t been taxing you properly, the sky is blue and water is wet.
I’m SO looking forward to meeting you, Thomas! 🙂
First off, wifey must believe everything that her husband says without questioning it.
For starters, there is no ‘sweet spot’ where a wage increase causes your take home pay to be less than before.
OP, how can you be so fucking gullable?
Many people are not getting raises at all these days so really you should consider your husband lucky. If your husband is that unhappy at this job he should leave. As the wife you are only hearing and seeing one side of this story. Keep that in mind.
as much as i want to make a nasty comment on this bitch, i just can’t do it.sigh.
Stand by your Man
If anything, GV, the take home pay would be the same… and even then I’m suspicious.
No guys, it is possible. I’ve seen it happen.
Much looking forward to meeting you as well PK. When is the summit again? and where?
ok then… care to explain?
or are we to take you to your word?
It is possible. It happened to me when I got my last step increase. Before the step increase, anytime I took overtime it would put me in the next tax bracket and my pay would end up a little smaller than normal. And that’s why I now bank it for time off instead of having it paid out. I do not blame my employer, they do not make the tax rules.
Tommy works in payroll, zed. He’s likely seen it all.
Summit — I haven’t sent official word, but Dec 18th. Same time, same place as last time.
Word via FB/Email should come soon!
And hay zed — last night I ran into your former roomie on the bus and *gasp* he actually talked to me UNLIKE YOU WHO IGNORES ME.
Fuckface.
Hahaha that made me laugh for some reason PK.
You’ll have to take my word for it Z. I come on this board to escape my job requirements, not to do calculations for your amusement like some tap dancing calculator wielding monkey. Gawd..
Hit me on FB PK, I think I remember where the last one, that I missed, was held but I’m not sure.
I dunno…
I’ve been hammering this calculator like sebastien on a cardboard cutout of evander holyfield and haven’t come up with a single comparable of paying more taxes on less money.
http://lsminsurance.ca/calculators/canada/…
I’ve heard of unicorns too.. but until I see one, I think I’ll remain skeptical.
… and you were doing more than enough talking for the both of us…
knob-gobbler
That’s an income tax calculator, not a payroll tax calculator, the two are different. Payroll taxes, believe it or not are not based on a percentage, but rather a fixed amount. If you make between x and y you pay z, per pay period.
And no one is talking about paying more taxes on less money. We’re talking about the point at which the increase in taxes is more than the raise. It happens.

Also, the way this bitch reads, it sounds like OP has looked at her husband’s pay statement.
see… now that little quip was all I needed to clear the muddy water a bit.
wasn’t so hard, was it?
so it’s payroll taxes that are afoot eh?
god damn complicated gubment.
I also love how bonuses (however super-mega-ultra-rare they are) are placed on paycheque so that we’re bumped up 2 brackets and effectively ass-rape taxed around 50% on it.
Yeah, we get fucked on bonuses and holiday pay. I got a bonus not too long ago, I get one every year. My net pay ended up being the gross amount for my bonus. So it’s almost as though I paid my entire paycheck in taxes. Meh, one of many reasons I want to leave Canada, or at least Nova Scotia.
knob-gobbler?
Is that REALLY the best you got?
You could’ve at least said “hi.”
🙁
Thomas, i have access to the official revenue canada online payroll calculator through my business. I’ve tried all 5k increments from 30k to 100k and I dont see any downward dip in take home pay.
What 2 numbers are you using?
I don’t know the exact numbers, but I’ve seen it happen. I don’t recall the details, maybe it has to do with retroactive adjustments. Or maybe he receives more taxable benefits now so that causes an increase in taxable income but not actual dollars. Just curious, how is your official calculator any more official than the one that everyone has access to on the CRA website? Slow day or somethin GV? lol
Why is everyone calling me Thomas all the sudden? I only go by Thomas (with a silent s) when I speak french! I don’t mind tho lol I’ve been called worse.
Here’s how payroll determines how to tax people:

Just let me know if you prefer Tommy or Tom, I’ll be happy to switch.
The only scenario that I can think of: is when the original income is low enough that you haven’t been capped on the EI and CPP deductions, then all of a sudden they come off of 1 check. This might be pretty dramatic for a worker that doesn’t get overtime hours until late in the year, then works a ton in the same pay period.
Tommy, Tom, Thomas, TJ, Jules, Terminator, it’s whatever man, it’s all good. Thomas just seems to have caught on lately for some reason.
One thing I’ve learned working in payroll is that there are infinite scenarios. I was thinking about this earlier and I think the one that I got a call about the employee was working a fair bit of overtime, like igotaducky was talking about, that’s when it gets screwy.
one of the boyos is called thomas, strangely enough he calls me boss lady
Painy started calling you Thomas and it caught onnn from there.
I <3 that lady!
i do that with people’s names, unless you really are a dick and not a richard^^
Hey Girlie, I completely understand and feel for You!! That totally sucks, and ps- Good Value, it actually happens that the more over time you work the less you take home because after a certain amount of hours you are basically handing your pay over to the gov’t. I learned this lesson the hard way:) Tell your hubby to calculate deductions as well as net pay, and try to figure out how many hours a week he can pull before the gov’t has a hand in his pocket. That way he won’t kill himself on overtime. My dad taught me that, and the pays have been better since:) Good Luck! 🙂
Eeep! Sorry Great Value:) Didn’t read your last comment 🙂 🙂
