I never submit bitches but I am so hurt by yet another meddling property complaint we just received. We are the Griswold’s of our neighbourhood and have storage lockers to hold all of our Christmas lights which I agree have become slightly rusted due to the continued winter weather. Hard to paint this time of year. Apparently someone from our evolving snobby neighbourhood takes exception. These complaints ruin people’s lives and makes our neighbourhood a toxic place where you now do not trust your neighbours. We live our lives without bothering anyone and wish other people could learn to mind their own business.I am hurt by this and an anonymous call is cowardly. I would never do this to anyone myself. Mind your own business and let people live their lives. —Disillusioned HRM Resident

  1. Hey Mr. Anus, do you know what house they are talking about? You are quick to jump to conclusions about the state of their domicile. You don’t know the circumstances, health and financial, that these people may be gong through. Maybe instead of running and tattling to teacher, you should MYOFB. A lack of paint is not going to kill a neighbour.

  2. Just wondering OB, who gets to decide that metal lockers are ok but rusty metal lockers are not ok?

  3. I can speak to this from experience.
The answer lies in the Bruce Coburn song lyric “the trouble with normal is it always gets worse”. I grew up in a neighbourhood that was relatively tidy when we first mover there but after 20 years it was a slum. Many people had a “second” car behind, beside or even in front of their home. Trouble was it was up on blocks and being salvaged piece by piece to keep their “good” car running. It also wasn’t unusual to see random garbage piled against someone’s house or other rusting debris on the “lawn” which was really just a dead brown patch. There were no bylaws to speak of, and no enforcement if there were. The debris and general decay was also accompanied by an increase in crime. If the residents didn’t care about the neighbourhood then neither did the criminals. In fact, they felt very at home there.

I realize that’s a far cry from your situation but if your rusty bins are overlooked then the next guy can let his yard go down hill a bit and the next can not bother with that peeling paint and so on until someone has a car up on blocks. Someone has to draw the line. So, maybe just paint your bin when the weather improves and let it go. Otherwise you won’t have the moral authority to say anything when your neighbour does something worse. It’s a slippery slope.

  4. OB, I suggest that you paint your lockers with a rust color paint. That should teach your neighborhood a lesson or two.

  5. Next year, grow your four legal pots plants in front of it. Out of sight, out of (your) mind.

I always look for the win-win…

  6. “Next year” City Mouse.. we’ll believe it when we see it.. likely age-old poliTRICKS meant to sedate
