I can’t find any non-alcohol related restaurants or activities that are open beyond 10-11pm most nights of the week, and it makes me a little sad.
Drinking is fine and dandy, and if that’s your cup of tea, have at it hoss—to each their own.
But that’s not my scene, and I’m just wondering if I’m looking in all the wrong places.
I just want a place to hang out with friends, get a good meal—not feel like the staff is waiting for us to leave—and to not have the room packed with really drunk folk.
I’m Muslim, I don’t get off work until after sunset and with Ramadan practically here, I’m desperate to find some awesome G-rated eats and hangout spots.
People are all sorts of helpful when it comes to suggesting I go to a bar and not drink, to stay home or question my morals all together…but really? Halifax, you’re diverse. I know you’re hiding some gems in the night. —Night Owl

Ummm, no we are not hiding any gems!

I didn’t take the time to check the hours of every one of these places but, I’m sure there must be at least one or two that is “Ramadan friendly”. Good luck.
“I just want a place to hang out with friends, get a good meal-“
Come on everybody, let’s hear it with “it’s fun to stay at the YMCA”
I can’t wait until the 27th, Painy! Edward Scissorhands 🙂
you like the love story in that one, dontcha? zed was correct though, cry baby is a good choice, but it’s not directed by timothy b. it’s fun to watch for the older character actors
of course I’m right!
duh. 🙂
I predict it to be a little hard to watch eddy snippers though, it being such a dark movie.
may want to go early so you get a closer seat.
um, OB, pizza delight is open 24 hrs now on springgarden.
I’m not sure how you missed that since it’s plastered every week in the coast, pretty sure it’s in the metro/herald a lot too… maybe not so much anymore. dunno.
still… you could have chilled at sub rosa but all the e-tards damned that place a while back.
not sure how late the bowling alleys are open… but it’s at least to midnight.
Boston pizza is open late in bayers lake. ITs not exactly hopping with loaded people!
The things people subject themselves to all in the name of some make believe “god” !
*wipes a tear away*
As if praying to a make believe diety who’s only concern in this Universe with billions of Galaxy’s each containing , billions of stars that have billions & billions of planets is ‘god’ is keeping an eye on you ! you itsy, bitsy, teeny ,weeny insignificant piece of protoplasm. Ah…. laughter it truely is good for the heart & the soul.
Ramadan,Easter (my fav xmas), Hanukkah, genital mutilation, confessing your sins, dressing funny, wearing hats
damn it but even if I sat down & really worked at it….I could never make this funny shit up that the various ‘religious groups’ have come up with to torture themselves ! L O L humans for the most part are hilariously nuts .
….an alcohol free night spot so god’s not offended….. OB thank you for the laugh, it was great !
More- That was a douchy, ignorant, intolerant post. Regardless of whether or not you’re atheist (hey, me too), making fun of other people’s beliefs is an asshole move.
Trials of living in a smaller burg that often thinks it is bigger than it is. Places are not going to stay open and keep staff around if they are not busy, and many places may have tried in the past and the number of customers does not make it worthwhile. Overhead costs are high, and in general other than for bars, and special events this is not a go out and hit the bright streets kind of town. Partially because we have very few happening ‘bright streets’ areas. We don’t really have a full blown hard core downtown, midtown or uptown, as such.
There are a few places open other than pizza or donair joints, but rare and hard to find. Good luck finding some.
Bistro Le Coq is open till like 2am or something serving a late night menu, but that’s all I can think of off the top of my head.
Purple arsehole….I’m not an atheist !
I know there’s a creator of the Universe…I also know it doesn’t recognise us or even give a flying fuck about you, me or any infectious virus anywhere here….probably doesn’t even know this mudball exists.
After all you can’t even see earth from the other side of this galaxy & since there are BILLIONS & BILLIONS of galaxy’s ….
Imagine how difficult that would be…throw in the possiblity the creators actually in another reality & its like trying to see the fart bubble of a piece of protoplankon in an ocean the size of 1000 suns !
More, I agree with you. I can’t get the warm fuzzies from religion either, but who are we to shit on other people’s warm fuzzies?
I learned this from a comment I made on another website recently. I couldn’t find comfort in the fact that a 3 yr old boy, who was found dead in a dumpster, was “in a better place”. In my mind, I can think of a million better places than a dumpster. But the commenter who gave me a wake up call was a lady whose 18 month old granddaughter was murdered. All she had for comfort was the thought that her little one’s soul was with God.
I felt horrible, apologized, and will now think twice before I spew my opinion in anger. I still have the same opinion, but I see that words can really hurt. I still feel bad.
Whatever, religious people have no problem telling us “non believers”, we’re all going to hell if we don’t believe. That’s not disrespectful or ignorant at all. I prefer to think we’re a cancer cell in a celestial “body”, chugging away, poluting, speeding up our eventual demise, while we sit around and worry about things like money and our ever important, “convenience”.
Sometime I get tired of people spouting GOD IS GREAT shit and I tell them so.Afterwards feel like shit.More power to anyone that can find some ‘peace’ in such a shitty world. It’s just the Jesus -the man that turned water into wine and walked on water,really?2000 years ago they could do that kinda stuff,NO!.I beleive that there may be some higher power but a normal guy named Jesus that could perform magic trick’s.
Kontee, sorry you feel bad.
I don’t .
I buried my infant son.
It hurt, pretending he was ‘up there’ with some judgemental, cranky, all powerful motherfucker who allows wars , mass murder, rape & a host of plagues, disease , the death of small innocent children & all the other indignities that man inflicts on his fellow man gave me ABSOLUTELY NO COMFORT.
As a matter of fact I would perfer he was in hell , afer all the devil wants to torture, burn & humiliate us… or that’s how I see it from anything I ever read about the subject. Which is a lot more honest than
God may inflict those previously mentioned harms….BUT HE LOVES US!
Fuck off, wake up & smell the coffee !
You want or need to delude yourself to get through the day, fine.
I perfer reality with all its aches & pain & suffering. That’s how I know for sure I’m alive. When it all goes to black it won’t bloody well matter because I’ll be dead & seeing as I have a couple of operations coming up really quickly I may be checking out a lot sooner than I wish
But that still isn’t enough for me to start praying to the invisible boogey man, allah, god , jehova, kirshna or whatever title you or some other dead guy(s) came up with !
More, the loss of your son must have been excruciating, something I have not experienced so I can’t imagine the pain involved. People have different coping mechanisms. Religion brings order and comfort to a tough and painful life for many. Hope of great after-life and/or a big overseeing parent in the heavens takes a load off of some people. Hope is a powerful drug, it can be the difference between thriving and suicide.
That said, I am an atheist. I don’t believe in creation ergo I don’t believe in a creator. We’re just an infinitetesimal part of a story that never began and won’t end. Humans don’t have the capacity to understand what this universe is IMO so many use religion to fill in the gaps. I certainly don’t understand it.
I respect religion as a means of gaining personal strength and bringing order to one’s life but it shouldn’t ever be imposed on others. To each his/her own.
More, my heart goes out to you. I wish you all the best for your upcoming surgeries and I hope one day you heal that broken, angry heart of yours.

Soooo getting back to the OP’s point here…
There’s not a lot out there for late-night eats.
-Jean’s Chinese at Spring Garden & Robie is open until 10ish, I think. It’s pretty tasty and has lots of veggie options.
-Pizza Delight on Spring Garden (I know someone already mentioned this & it’s not too exciting, but it’s also a pretty nice interior)
-Freeman’s on Quinpool is pretty hit or miss (usually miss, IMO) but also open late
Those are all that I can think of, and none of them are really “gems”.
The movie Moving Day looks like it’s gonna be funny. They shot that on Portland street.
I lost a posting ,I wrote one before my last post.
My hearts not broken but thanks…. I’ve long since moved on. But to say that on a certain day in a certain month of the years since then, I haven’t shed a tear would be a lie.
What makes me angry is delusional people & their religious crap.
But my problem is with religion ( I have no problem with a creator concept AKA god.)
My problem started at a young age because unlike many other unfortunate children ….my parents came from 2 different religions & I was subjected to them depending on which Grand Parents &/or aunts & uncles I was with pretty much from birth.
So my upbringing was Catholic & Protestant at the same time…which in my opinion is what should be the law & all young children should be subjected to at least 2, hell I’d have no problem seeing all children have to learn 4 or 5 from a very young age.
(And before you say it or ask it my children were subject to 3 -Catholic, Protestant, Morman.)
I believe as with myself & my brothers…
It would quickly take the power of religions away from them, they would be seen for what they are by children… a way to scare you into being good. A way to control you & as you get older you’d see all they really want is your resources (your time, your support of the religions ideology & of course your money), so it can perpetuate itself. That they no nothing more about heaven or hell than your own imagination can come up with.
When otherwise rational people go off on the delusional “problems” , which are religious based. I’m not going to appologise for your mental problem(s).
Dump the stupidity from your life & you will be happier.
Remember there is no good religious person anywhere, who is as good as an athiest.
Because all religions teach that you do what you are told & you will be rewarded in heaven…YOU ARE DOING IT FOR THE REWARD. You may like to delude yourself into thinking …NO WAY ! I’m a good person…but in the back of your mind all those years of religious brainwashing is there …reward when you die !
But a good Atheist is good knowing they will never be rewarded in death. They just chose to be a good person
Chew on that for a bit
More, atheists don’t believe in god(s). Are you sure you’re not a theist? In any case, I chewed on your angry, narrow minded sermon about how all religious people people are ‘stupid’ and have ‘mental problems’ and, I have to say, it tasted horribly bitter so I spit it out.
OP, you mentioned restaurants or “activities”. How about a fitness club membership?
Lou ! ! ! !
You gotta peel it !
Its really sweet in the centre.
THere’s no calories (so there is no Guilt)
Because of the lack of calories theres no way you can get fat ! ! (so there are no Self Esteem issues)
Its readily avaiable & best of all its free, so no tithing.
Plus you can choose to enjoy it or not any time of the day or night & never have to set aside a moment of your life except in just living.
And if you meet someone you really really like…I mean, you think this may be the one….there’s no Shame if you take them home & fuck their & your brains out. Enjoy yourself, but please remember to use protection… there’s no need for a bit of pleasure to be bringing an unwanted child into the world.
AND there are some diseases & infections out there that you want to protect yourself from. But seeing as there are all kinds of diseases & infections in this world that you can catch without even having a good time (aka sex) its not as a horrific worry as say…some religious nuts would like to make you believe ~;)

Ob have fun at the macdonald’s or subway on spring garden. Any place in Halifax that is open late and not fast food will more than likely serve alcohol. If you are such a devout Muslim then you should have absolutely no problem not drinking. Imagine what would happen if I was in Riyadh, SA and I posted on a local forum about where I could find a pub to go out for a drink after work?
that movie looks great, boru… love will sasso and charlie murphy!
The Choco Cafe on Lower Water St. is a great spot! They are half chocolate shop and half cafe and they are open late, anywhere between 10pm and 12am depending on the night. The owners are really friendly people… and they give out little samples of chocolate all day. Check it out!
