I am so tired of busting my ass serving food and drink to all of you snotty doctors and lawyers (oh yes, can’t forget the government workers and teachers) who feel that it is ok to tip me 10%. It’s not real work, right? It’s not difficult and exhausting catering to you whining, bitching, pompous, self-righteous assholes who can’t even look me in the eye when I am talking to you, right? And it’s so annoying when the server interrupts your conversation to make sure you’re enjoying your meal, RIGHT? Guess what asshole – that’s actually part of my job. Same with pouring water and topping off wine – so stop giving me dirty looks. An occasional thank-you would be nice too. Oh, and you know that shitty tip you leave (I know I know, I have a pathetic job and that’s all you feel I deserve). I have to share that amongst the managers and kitchen staff as well. We all appreciate your gratitude for a job well done. By the way, the tax is 13% now… so stop gauging your tip on the tax because you are ripping my good service off. I wish you would tell me that you’re cheap upfront, so i could give you the equivelant in service.

I hate this. Yes, good service deserves a good tip, but you’re complaining that it’s not a good enough tip for you. Some people can’t afford to leave what everyone else does, so instead of getting your back up about it, why not just be thankful that they’ve left something at all? As for the disrespect from patrons, well, there is no excuse for that..you’re going to get genuine asshats everywhere you go, so find a way to deal.
I agree completely with poop. Also, a 10% tip is hardly an insult tip. It may be at the low end of customary, but it’s still a tip. Chill out. There is no requirement that a patron tip or anything that says how much to tip. I am sure some people tip more than the norm too. It all evens out. Shitty tippers is part of the job. Shitty people are a part of life. And as long as I am not being an asshole to you, you should treat me with the same good service whether I am going to tip you well or not.
Oh man, I can’t wait for the shitstorm from this one.Hey out there doctors, lawyers, teachers we all know NONE of you have ever waited tables and we all know that NONE of you have 1000’s of dollars in debt to pay off, so stop being so stingy with the tip action and start coughing up 20%. You know you got it.
By the way, I was being sarcastic. There will always be bad tippers regardless of their wealth (or lack of) so get used to it.
Atleast you have one of the shitty jobs where it’s customary to tip. There are plenty others which are just as degrading and low paying, where tips arent part of the equation.
You don´t deserve the disrespect you get, and I know there´s a ton of it. Trust me, after working minimum wage jobs for years, I know. You also, however, don´t deserve a tip. You do your job, and if you do it well and have made someone´s dinning experience pleasure, then, if they are able to or feel like it, they will leave you a tip. This tipping automatically is BS. Just getting back from overseas, it was refreshing to feel that you are not forced to tip, and to encounter people who are grateful to recieve the tip when you do. a friend of mine told me of a female bartender at the crow who would demand a tip before serving patrons and then ask for more if she didnt feel it was enough! Sorry, the point is you are hired to do a job and you do the job well or you get canned. I know that you are not paid what you should be, but that is not my or your patrons´ fault. You can always get a new job
Everyone has an opinion on this, so Ill spill mine.I agree that no-one AUTOMATICALLY deserves a tip, but it is regarded as part of a standard in that industry, weither you want to debate about it or not; its fact. Also, most established restaurants have a tip out system based on the individual servers food sales.(there are other systems..). That means, if you stiff on a tip, the server has to pay for you regardless. Or, if you under-tip on a large bill, you may just cover that servers % of tip out or perhaps they may have to pay for you, again. Fair????? Don’t be so cheap…..If you don’t expect to tip, don’t eat the hell out. Point blank. There is usually take out option.
Tips are given for good service, if the patron feels like it. I used to bust my ass doing construction at min. wage during the summers and didn’t get shit-all aside from a sunburn(you want “real” work? Try slinging aluminum siding and a sledge instead of a tray). Now I work service, and you know what? I feel damned grateful for anything extra I get, no matter how small it is, nor do I expect people to shell out anything more than what I charge. Suck up your sour grapes.
If I want to tip, I will. If I don’t want to, I won’t. Don’t you think I have a choice in the matter? You do get an hourly wage to serve at a restaurant don’t you? So why should i pay extra if whatever I’m paying for the food is covering your pay? I can understand if you’re only getting paid in commission, but you’re not. If you don’t like what you get for tips, you can simply get another job that pays the same or more per hour and not worry about tips because they don’t exist. I’m not saying i don’t tip. I usually give a tip based on the service I get. Numerous times i left the restaurant without even leaving a cent as a tip. Terrible service! I don’t base my tips on 10% or what not. If i get good service, by all means i’m leaving a tip, but it will be within my living means. I won’t live beyond my means so you can be all smiles and giggles. If I don’t get service, well then you’re getting SFA, actually usually i leave a very small amount as an insult. I mean i was insulted myself. Eye for an Eye. Who says bad service at an establishment is not an insult to the clients? I see tips as giving change to beggars on the side of the road, only you do it indoors rather than outdoors. Easier, Beg. Don’t lift a plate.. this way you’ll truly only live on tips rather than the additional hourly wage, Don’t get me started on snobby bar tenders. Fuck you, give me the bottle and I’ll poor my own drink jerk-off!!
