How about this for fixing public sector compensation:
-Scrap the current MLA pension plan and give them a defined contribution plan. If they’re fans of the private sector lets give them a private sector type of pension plan.
-Scrap the teacher’s grid and only give increments for seniority. Let them be reimbursed for courses taken and books bought and give them an ‘education training dividend’ of $750 for every course successfully completed with a cap for the overall number of courses reimbursed over a teacher’s career.
-Scrap the current long service award for public sector workers and replace it with a “long term worker dividend” of $365 for every year worked
-Have an informal agreement that unless there is a recession that public sector workers will get at least a half percent raise every year in their wages and a maximum of one and a half percent depending on what the level of inflation is. —Mr. Fix It

  1. Sec….lemme get my slide rule…will get back to you…

Here’s what I came up with: all public sector raises should be inflation, minus a half percent.

Public sector wages should not be a source of inflation.

  2. When you are already well paid, an inflationary increase is all that you need.

Asking for more and more is wrong and greedy. demands must be sustainable. especially when the money isn’t coming from my taxpaying pocket, it is coming from debt that our children will inherit .

  3. When you are overpaid, any increase is unnecessary. Many teachers are in that category. How about giving any raise based upon how well their students get educated rather than how many years of pensionable time they have put in? As in most public service sectors, there is a lot of deadwood.

  4. Yak, yak, woof, woof, the government will never change. The MLAs will still have sweet pensions & public sector workers will continue to have damn decent perks that few in the private sector could ever hope for. The unions will continue to strip the provincial coffers ad nauseum and the government will continue to involve itself in more stupid, idiotic money-losing ventures like the Yarmouth ferry service. To hope for more would call for a complete overthrow of government by the Cape Breton Liberation Army. And, even then, you’d have to keep the Richmond Country platoon from stealing everything that isn’t nailed down.

  5. You guys do realize that the majority of government employees aren’t making buckets of money, right? I work in the government and most of my co workers are on the lower end of the pay scale. Not every government employee is making 100 grand. On top of that, most of us are over worked because when someone leaves the position will go unfilled for months if it it’s filled at all. The work needs to get done so guess who gets to do it? Even if it’s classified higher than our pay grade, we still don’t get any compensation for it. I know many people in private industry who do the same thing I do and get paid more. So before you judge, really look at what’s going on in the public service. It isn’t all high rolling times for everyone.

  6. And there are lots of people in the private sector making just as much if not more. Everyone makes it seem like government and public sector employees are living high off the hog. I have a decent position within the public sector and I make just enough to break even each month. I’m thankful to have the job I have, but it really irks me when people think I’m taking advantage of the tax payer and living some magical life with bags of money because I work in the public sector. For the work I do and the amount of it I do compared to the private sector, I’m grossly underpaid.
