Can’t the teachers and government come together? Come on guys! Maybe each side could give a little. How about this: One percent a year for wages to keep up with inflation; Keep the long service award but have a reasonable size of payout by either capping it or else paying a certain dollar amount for each year of service ($365 for each year worked). No service award should be higher than the annual salary of the average working Nova Scotian or the amount earned by someone making minimum wage in a year; Teachers should pay some of their retirement health benefits (25 percent) because that’s only fair as other public sector workers have to pay something. I think we need a little ‘labour peace of mind’ in the province, which means being fair while not bankrupting us to get there. Hey Coast, how about running an online survey about what people think is a fair offer for the teachers for: wage increases, maximum long service award payout and the percent teachers should pay for retirement health benefits? —Two Cents Worth

Pick up the latest issue of Frank magazine. Check out the 300+ HRM teachers making salaries ($86k-$135k) most of us could only dream of having. And they want more. I’ll be goddamned if I want my tax money funding some fucking teacher’s grand tour of Europe.
As long as both parties take a combative stance, nothing will be resolved. It reminds me of playground behaviour.
I agree with T.T. The teachers want to keep their service award because they gave up a percentage of their pension 10 years ago and that service award makes up the difference. I have heard from many teachers who say that service award (of up to $35,000) is non negotiable and a primary reason they will strike. They couldn’t give a flying f@*k if it bankrupts the province or if the VG falls apart beneath patients’ feet. It’s all about the money for them. I’m not too impressed (generally) with this government, but in this case, they seem to be more reasonable than the union.
You don’t need Frank Mag to see the teachers salaries. Just google HRSB salaries (or go here: http://www.hrsb.ca/about-hrsb/financial-se…) and you will find the full list including names, position, school…. And when you look at the grand total, remember this is just one school board.
I’ll support the teachers money issues when they start teaching again and assigning homework and issue tests/quizzes. The current norm of coloring and overcomplicating everything is just ludicrous and it is no wonder our kids are stupid as fuck now. Also, not failing kids is clearly not working out.
I pay enough in union dues( and as a taxpayer, I pay enough educational taxes) that the union and school board can afford to put their best lawyers in a boardroom to resolve this conflict. Anything less is absolute BS.
I wish the teachers/union reps and government would stop using the media to communicate their positions. It makes no progress to vent your latest gripe on news-radio. It only exacerbates the aggravation of the public. Quit trying to win approval from the masses through sound bites.
You’re supposed to be our educators and political leaders. Start fucking acting like it, grow the fuck up and negotiate.
The Teachers are the new Trump lmao You love em or ya hate em and if you hate em,make sure you twist it and take it all out of context and make sure you bully them really good. It is the Canadian way I am beginning to notice.
