One popular grocery store chain has these convenient grilled chicken pieces that I love, but it is the worst feeling in the world going to buy them from the chronically overworked employees behind the counter. Just standing there and watching them you get the impression every hour is their rush hour. They are clearly busy, you don’t feel comfortable asking for assistance, and when you do they look at you like you just dumped a ton of water into the canoe they are bailing out. And they are all wonderful employees, polite and helpful- they just clearly have more responsibilities than is reasonable for one human being!! For the love of god, these people need back-up- get them some co-workers!!!! —Cringing Sympathetically

  1. CRINGING’S DILEMMA

“One popular grocery store chain has these convenient grilled chicken pieces that I love, but it is the worst feeling in the world going to buy them from the chronically overworked employees behind the counter.” Cringing Sympathetically

“Cringing Sympathetically” is cringing because of the dilemma he faces. While on the one hand his selfish gluttony – the convenient grilled chicken pieces that he loves – comes into conflict with his sense of social justice on the other – the chronically overworked employees behind the counter. If the track record on this site is any indication, his gluttony will win hands down.

    A pleasure as always,

    Cheerio!

  2. Really? You’re bitching about this. They are doing their jobs, just like every other worker out there. Some like what they do and some don’t. BTW, I don’t think anyone put a gun to their head and forced them to take this particular job. And I’ve met many who *gasp* actually enjoy their job. Fuckin’ hipster.

  3. Remembering my time in retail, they would probably rather keep the limited hours alloted per week than share their shift.

  4. Would you like us to erect a crucifix in the parking lot for you to crawl up on? Would you prefer nails or Velcro? Maybe a little crown of chicken fingers for a final touch?

Those employees, for the most part, would rather be busy than idle. It makes the shift fly by.

  5. sounds like someone’s mom wrote this.

dead shifts are awful, the hours streeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetch

  6. Firstly, it’s great to feel empathy for the “less fortunate” but it’s equally important not to be patronizing. Give the staff credit and assume they can stand up for themselves if they feel they are understaffed.

Secondly, I’m quite sure I know who you are talking about and my impression is that the staff (especially the bloke) are simply not the type to make small talk or to be cloyingly welcoming. I wouldn’t read too much into that. They are polite and efficient. That’s all one can ask.

Thirdly, if you find it upsetting to see people working so hard don’t ever travel to a third world country.

Finally, let this be a lesson to the young folk out there and, as our resident philosopher/educator montrealman is wont to say: Stay in school!

  7. I, too, find this post to be patronizing. Unless a person is truly being treated badly, it’s just not cool to presume that someone working at a certain pace that is an inherent part of certain kinds of jobs is in need of pity. I presume that the service counter has fast and slow times during the day. If it was truly relentless at every moment I’m pretty sure that no one would work there for long.

People do all kinds of jobs–what one person would dislike is something that another person finds enjoyable, or at least might not mind so much.

  8. The deli in most grocery stores are either understaffed or overworked or both. Sometimes it takes 10 minutes to even get served. Every deli should have a counter person and a food prep person. Just my 2 cents here folks, I’m just a guy who likes cold cuts.
