Dear servers and bartenders:
I’m giving you a warning that when I come into your restaurant or bar, that you won’t be getting one red cent from me. Know why? Because tipping is one of the most ridiculous concepts I’ve ever encountered!
You’re doing your job! I’m already paying out the ass for a meal, so why the fuck do I gotta give you people extra? It’s waiting on tables, serving food– it’s not fucking rocket science! Anyone can do it.
And to my girlfriend who got mad at me when we were dining out the other night because I told her I wasn’t tipping, oh fuck off! You argued that the server deserved a tip because I got her to refill my drink 3 times and gave me a discount because they were out of a certain menu item we wanted… IT’S HER JOB TO SERVE PEOPLE AND GIVE DISCOUNTS WHEN NECESSARY!
Then when you saw me put a line through the tip section of the credit card slip, you pull out 8 bucks out of your purse and hand it to the server! Seriously, 8 bucks? On top of that, you called me cheap and wouldn’t talk to me for the rest of the night! Um, if I was cheap, I wouldn’t spend money in a restaurant!
So, yeah, the gist of this bitch is: I don’t tip. I don’t have to and I won’t. You can give the best service ever, I still won’t tip. Sorry. —You’re getting paid so shut up!
This article appears in Sep 16-22, 2010.

Naw man you cheappp
God, your girlfriend must think you’re a cheapskate. She probably already knew that anyway but I guess it’s confirmed now.
You should cook for yourself at home if you can’t scrounge up the 15-20% for a tip.
I DON’T LEAVE TIPS EITHER YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Then again I only eat at fast food restaurants..
BUT I’M SUCH A MANLY MAN, I DON’T TIP!
You pay with a credit card? Use cash like a baller, bitch.
Agree with ol’ funk up there.
You’re cheap.
I believe this to be a fake bitch – a complete fabrication placed here to generate another meaningless exchange about servers and their customers.
I don’t know anyone in real life this stupid.
NEXT!!
I hope humans like the OP don’t actually exist outside the internet
Yeah very cheap and a douche to boot.
If someone is tipped it encourages them to continue their good service and friendly attitude. I always tip good when someone checks to see if I need another drink, serves me quickly, and answers my questions. You ignore me and don’t do your job properly and you probably won’t get a tip. I’m looking at you “beebonaby boobop” you idiots.
yea i think the op is just baiting 🙂
BOGUS BITCH!!!
I’ll bet when you take a toonie out of your pocket, Queen Elizabeth blinks from the light.
Guerilla Funk, when I was reading what you wrote I pictured Riley Freeman saying it.
I always tip, but I tip really well if the server was nice and efficient. Some servers depend on those tips.
I’m guessing you can’t eat in the same place more than 2-3 times. I would stick with the mall food-courts, sounds more your style. And you KNOW that lady of yours will be searching for gentleman who knows how to act in a restuarant.
Walter
Geez I hope you don’t think you’re going to win any brownie points by being a jerk to your girlfriend online. She’s right, you are cheap and you’re also a douche. I wouldn’t want to be seen in public with you.
I always tip, and tip more when there is great service. My boyfriend tends to over tip, and I tease him for it… I’d rather have a bf that over tips than a cheap douche like OP. But I’m with the Commandante – bogus bitch.
Enjoy the last days of your relationship. Your GF will soon get tired of being embarassed by your behaviour and arguing over a few measly bucks. However, look on the bright side OP. You will have more time to sit at home alone counting all of your money.
I’m with the fake OP here, tipping is the most ridiculous thing created in N.A. I’ve been in Japan and China recently and was scolded for trying to leave the restaurant after giving the cashier 3000 Yen for a 2550 Yen meal. They said they would be insulted and dishonored for taking 450 Yen fr providing the service they were employed to do. Same thing happened in a Chinese restaurant later on. People here just have a sense of entitlement I guess…
For me it ALWAYS depends on the Service & the meal.
IF the service sucks, so does the tip.
If the service sucks & the meals does as well & nobody has cum….no tip at all !
Did you know in Florida, servers & Bartenders can legally be paid 50% of minimum wage because they earn tips !
they only get half of the minimum wage….in that state at least you’d have to get tipped to be able to survive…not that minimum wage is enough to survive on !
Finally! The OP is right. The rest of us don’t get tips for doing our jobs. You don’t tip your doctor, do you? How about your mailman? Your dentist? Your mechanic? The cashier at Sobeys? Then why should we tip someone who simply takes our order and brings us food. Any monkey can perform the same job. In the section that says “TIP” I write a stock-tip…..the servers can make more in the markets than in tips.
So obviously you have never served…yet you seem to believe it’s the easiest job in the world. Good to know you are passing judgement on something you have never done your self…You seem like a great guy, your girlfriend is so lucky to have a prince like you. Having served in the past I can assure you that dealing with cheap ass holes like yourself is not easy, and most who do the job are educated, intelligent people. Tipping is legitimate, or most people wouldn’t do it. Use your head before embarassing yourself, and your poor girlfriend by being such an ignorant douche.
I totally see both sides of this. I tip anywhere that it`s called for and well!, coffee shops, restaurants, hair salon, spas, but my BF refuses to ever tip at a coffee shop, because it`s a 2 second service. I think this post is real….and his womans leaving him.

the one jab basically any woman can get, and make a living on. The reason is because of tips.”

On the other hand, I never tip at a coffee place.
Good point about coffee shops. The way I see it, I’m waiting on them – not the other way around.
i tip the folks who cut the hound’s nails, but i’m surrounded by chiens which makes me all fuzzy inside^^
Try working in a restaurant or bar and you will change your mind. Cheap ass
people in the service are paid below minimum wage, most of their income is from tips! asshole.
PurpleFire: Riley Freeman is more, “But I’m payin’! That makes her a ho!”
Fuck sakes, you watch The Boondocks too? Godamn!
Wouldn’t it be nice if all the restaurant, pub and bar owners read this bitch and realized they were underpaying their staff and forcing customers to grudgingly divvy up the difference. Then they could raise wages and put and end to this tipping practice to better serve their customers. To accomplish this feat they’d have to raise the prices of the food and bevvies substantially so who really wins here?
Oh, and by the way OP non-tippers gain a pretty quick reputation among wait staff so when you start receiving shitty service you’ll have only yourself to blame. That ought to impress your girlfriend. Oh, wait, she’s already way less than impressed with your behaviour. So when she becomes less enthusiastic about you, there’s again only one person to blame. Yourself.
Most people don’t get tipped because they offer good service; it’s just expected of them because they’re getting paid, so I don’t know what makes people who work at restaurants and bars any different. Unlike in some places in the United States, people here in restaurants already get minimum wage or similar and the tips just add quite a bit to that.
Nevertheless it’s custom and you tend to be seen badly if you don’t do it, so I still do.
It is the custom in many countries – maybe not in Asia, but still in Europe (maybe to a lesser amount than 15%) and south american countries it’s considered polite. I don’t see what the big deal is. If I’m going out for dinner, it’s just part of the budget. When you travel it’s always good to know the customs, and in Canada, the custom is to leave gratitude.
NGF: I do watch The Boondocks… I love that show.
Perhaps if customers do not tip as much as they do, we’d have a lot less 30 year old bartenders and waitresses.
It’s not ok to be doing this job past 22 or 23, it’a rut.
Tip less and help these people get on with their lives.
I’m a server that BUSTS my ASS for shitty minimum wage and TIPS are what pay my rent.
It’s a good thing nobody knows who you are, man. Or else you’d be eating loogies, pubes and food that “accidentally” fell on the floor.
If you’re a rude prick, don’t go out to eat. If you don’t think your stressed out, under-paid server won’t fuck with your food, YOU’RE WRONG.
Thanks to the people that don’t tip at coffee shops… *Sigh* I work at one. It’s a different environment than a restaurant, sure. But it’s still a highly stress place to work, especially when you have a line of customers out the door, and each customer has their own modifier (soy milk, less hot, extra foam, no foam, extra hot, skim milk, 1%, extra sweet, half sweet, etc.). And, considering I’ve been doing it for over two years now and I’ve seen a lot of people come and go through my workplace, NO, it is not an “easy job”. There’s a lot you have to remember. Don’t get me wrong, of course. It’s not the hardest job on the planet and I most certainly don’t expect people to be handing me out $5 tips or anything. I just don’t appreciate it being suggested that my job is simple enough that a monkey can do it.
And, considering everything, I do rely on those tips a lot. I actually save them so that every few months when I find myself in a financial snag, I have a back-up plan. If it wasn’t for tips, things would be a lot more difficult.
PS: I definitely agree that some of my co-workers don’t deserve tips, btw. They’re useless… and you can thank me for being one of the few people to make sure the area is sanitary and that your drink is actually made properly.
merci coffee slinger. i feel for youse guys when some shmuck orders a de-caf low fat soy latte with baby’s tears…but hey customer’s are always right *snort*
I tip for my tea’s everyday!
Yeppers, I always toss some change in the jar too – mostly because my neighbourhood coffee slingers offer the best cappuccino I have had outside of Italy… And the 6th one is free 🙂
ever have kids to put thru college o.p., cash is fucking tight for everyone, and the uni’s want to raise tuition, figure that one out.
“If you don’t think your stressed out, under-paid server won’t fuck with your food, YOU’RE WRONG.” Universalist
So if you’re having a bad day, your going to sprinkle crabs & pubes in our food, regardless of how well we tip… Right? Ergo the customer is tipping you 15% of the sub-total under duress? It has no bearing on your performance or attitude?
So it’s not really a tip, so much as a health and safety surcharge imposed by someone not motivated enought to get a job they actually like.
“Guerilla Funk, when I was reading what you wrote I pictured Riley Freeman saying it.”
EXACTLY WHAT I WAS GOING FOR hahaha

OP you lostttt
“cheap” doesn’t really describe this attitude, such a term merely placates what she really thinks.. You go ahead and give that warning BEFORE you’re served and see what happens next. And THEN, dare talk to your servers and learn many of them are slinging beer or food to simply pay for an extra car, doctorate tuition or some other “what can I do to earn extra cash” feat that is really quite “beneath” many of them. Your presumption, sir, that these people work for minimum wage in a serving role to earn minimum wage, is simply WRONG. It’s your presumption that’s so embarrassing to your girl. GROW UP.
Oh, and to the rest of you who don’t tip, go back to your own country if you like how they do things so much. It’s really simple…. if you want to live in Canada, talk like a Canadian, eat and walk like a Canadian then you can tip like a generous Canadian as well.

What a fucking cheap assed skid! You want multiple refills and discounts and figure the costs for those come out of the sky? Fuck you, I hope your woman dumps you for a waiter or even better a WAITRESS you loser. Angry all the way to BC, ya douche!
Holy Fuck Kay…100%
Who is that person and what did s/he do with kay?
I am on both sides of the fence here. I work my ass off and get paid minimum wage. When someone comes back and wants their paint re-tinted because they changed their mind, or I’ve spent over a half an hour helping someone with their home decor decisions, and they leave without buying anything, I’m fine. I don’t bitch about it – it’s my job!
So when people who work in a bar/restaurant/coffeee shop (or anywhere else that tips are expected) complain, it kind of pisses me off. I work just as hard as you do. I deal with shitty customers, hard to please bitches and bastards…who doesn’t??
Working for minimum wage sucks, that’s a given. But tips shouldn’t be.
the thing is margins in a restaurant are so thin (except for like chains) that the owner can’t afford to pay anymore than the minimum; and believe me any can do it VERY FEW can do it well
the margins are like wafer-thin mints monsieur
Well said, Oceanchick. I also agree with everyone else on here who called you cheap OP, and I hope your gf dumps your ass!
Anyone who agrees with this ridiculous bitch clearly has no clue how hard a server’s job actually is and that (most) servers earn their tips!
Sebastian, why the fuck would we tip our doctors or dentists? Last time I checked, they make 6 figures. As for the rest of your examples, I’m sure they make a higher wage as well (except cashiers, however they get raises…servers don’t unless min. wage goes up).
Somebody’s in a Monty moodtonight :>)
sorry…the troupe is always rattling around dans mon cerveau. goleafyhabsgo
Anyone can serve sure, but not everyone can deal with a twat in a civil manner. The ability to do so alone deserves a tip.
I feel so validated by everyone’s comments here… <3 Haha.
it’s a nice feeling when your customer’s understand when there be them twats to tend to
PS: I should change my name to “The Itis”.
You know what you should never change … Cleo.
Unless it’s Cleo eating a donair!
This whole tip talk reminds me of the restaurant I used to work at, where the owner chased down some students for tip, and when the students said: “We are students, we don’t have a lot of money.”, the owner said, “you have enough money to eat here. You have money to tip.” I wasn’t there when it happened but I still laugh about it.
Omg… I would never chase after someone for not tipping me, whether or not I was a server. Lol.
Hay JDP: you work at sbux, right? I can tell from your descriptive post (half sweet, no foam, etc…).
Making a decent drink there is actually quite a talent. There’s one particular guy at the one I frequent that can make a frappuccino like no other! 🙂
One question can deter me from tipping: “How much change do you want back?”
Being asked that by my or another server results in a shaken head and a request for all my change returned to me. You NEVER ask a customer how much they want back.
FYI, servers get paid minimum wage to serve assholes like you. We grin and bear it while you ask us, sorry demand us to fill up your drink a gazillion times while you’re too f’n cheap to even buy a drink worth us refilling. We tip out the people who cook your meal, who seat you, who wash your dishes, so when assholes like you don;t tip, WE PAY. In that Mr. Cheap asshole, we are NOT getting paid to serve you, but are PAYING to put up with your complete and utter disrespect of our work. F*ck you.
A lot of jobs out there are minimum wage but still don’t get tips. Grow the fuck up and do your job. You won’t get pennies with that attitude.
Maybe we should tip movie theatre ushers for reminding us to stash our trash. They’re helping the environment that way you know. Are you helping the environment? Didn’t think so.
“You NEVER ask a customer how much they want back.”
Do you have to be special to be a customer? I always get treated like a person…
I think the problem is the system of tipping out. Servers shouldn’t have to pay to do their jobs. Tipping out should be based on total tips taken in, not total sales, because that assumes tipping is a requirement, and not a choice.
I think the problem most people have with tipping isn’t the actual tipping part, it’s the expectation. Tipping isn’t seen as something nice to do for great service, it’s seen as something that’s required in order to get a basic level of decent service, which, quite frankly, is a bunch of bullshit. When you work in the service industry it’s your JOB to treat customers well (in ANY customer service position). If you can’t do that (especially without the customer paying you extra), then perhaps a career change is in order. I know if *I* don’t carry out all the duties of *my* job, my ass’ll get tossed out the door, yet for servers if they don’t get tipped by someone and they treat them like shit the next time around it’s the customer’s fault because they didn’t get an extra reward for OMG DOING THEIR JOB. I mean, they’re kind of not really carrying out all the duties in their job description in that instance, are they? I think the difference here is that customer service is so subjective compared to the duties in other job descriptions. If a receptionist decided that they weren’t going to answer phones because their Christmas bonus sucked (or there was no bonus), I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t be a receptionist for very long (because they weren’t carrying out the duties of their job).
Let’s face it: no one becomes a server because it’s OMG SO AWESOME serving people food: they do it because the tips (i.e.: money) is good.
And it’s not like servers claim every last cent of their tips, either.
NGF… I dont’ think you qualify to have “The Itis”
Excellent idea NGF.
I think it’s very obvious who the bitches are who have actually walked in a server’s shoes versus those who think they know something about it because they *gasp* ate at a real-for-real sit-down restaurant. Perhaps it’s just the difference between grown ups vs kids just now getting their heads around how hard one must work to pay their own rent but these attitudes are, at the very least, lacking experience.
NFG, I don’t know WTF is wrong with Mod4.0 but let me see what I can do to rattle her cage. I’m nearly positive there’s a little more than minimum wage inspiring this job be done well but let’s see what a little “tip” might do to improve such “service”.
oh and Fat, I learned that from you and NS in general, “if you don’t like us treating you like shit then feel free to leave” so don’t act all fucking surprised when the same bullshit gets slung back over the fence. Fuck you very much…. have a shitty day! 🙂
*croons* Can you feel the love tonight?????
“paid below minimum wage,”
Not true. That’s why it is called “minimum wage”….employers cannot pay you less than that.
If you need tips to survive, maybe you should get a better job.
sebastian, there’s “minimum wage” and then there’s “student’s minimum wage” and in some provinces there’s a “food and beverage server’s minimum wage”. The world is a big place, I know… now so should you. tiger89 might have been referring to minimum wage in ON being $10.50/hr, unless you’re a food & beverage server, then you get a minimum wage of $8.90/hr. Even our government “expects” servers to be tipped.
I agree with you. Tipping is a ridiculous practice and I refuse to do it. As for your girlfriend…she is obviously brain dead so you might want to reconsider her.
I have a question. If I go to a restaurant and my waitress/waiter takes forever to bring me my drinks, takes forever to take my order. Brings me my meal and notices my glasses are empty…but then doesn’t bring me a refill until 3/4 the way through my meal…if not till the very end…. then to top it off I have to go find them to get my bill. Should I tip? I’m the easiest person to serve and I’m a great tipper.
Ugg what is with servers that think they’re the gods/goddesses of the service/minimun wage world? I worked at a sub shop, you know, I actually took an order, made the sandwich, baked the bread, cleaned dishes, worked cash, prepared all the food, dealt with bitches too etc etc etc. And I didn’t get tipped and didn’t expect one. I also worked as a head cashier, I rangd people in, bagged their items, informed them of all the 2893579025 promotions and discounts going on that day, did the bookeeping reports, kept the safe in balance, dealt with the scum of the earth, fixed what cashiers did wrong, made sure everyone got their break, cleaned, stocked shelves, audtting cashier trays, etc etc etc! And I also did not get tipped and didn’t expect it. Why should you be the ones who SHOULD be tipped? That being said, I always tip just because it’s how things are done, I just don’t agree that servers believe they SHOULD get tipped for doing a shitty job when there a ton of people doing just as shitty and maybe even shittier jobs for minimum wage as well. You’re should feel extremely lucky to get tips and the fact that you complain you don’t get some is absolutely gross. In Nova Scotia, you cannot get paid below minimum wage. There is “unexperienced” min wage and “experienced” minimum wage, but you do not get paid less than unexperieced ever. Good day brats.
Nicely done mel. I agree with every point you’ve just made.
Students are broke, well, so am I. I don’t get tips so they are making a lot more money than I am. I tip because it’s expected of me. It is the “norm”, but then shouldn’t a lot of us receive tips too? There are A LOT of other types of work out there that pay min wage and we deal with the same shit you servers do. I get compliments and remarks from customers frequently about how good I am at my job. But tipping wouldn’t happen where I work. I do get a $40 bonus if I get a certain amount of “good job” remarks, but that is once a month. Not every shift I work.
Fuck you OP. Just fuck you and your cheap ass.
LOL @ OP.
I tip, probably better than I should most times (20-25%), especially considering the poor service usually rendered by the vapid minded self important douche bags who seem to lead the “service sector” around these parts.
Perhaps I should be more careful about who I tip, and if I am feeling uninspired when no one offers to get me a second drink, when no one checks to see if I like my meal, when I get a bad haircut, when I have a racist cabbie… then I should be withholding my gift for those more deserving who clearly show they care what I, as a customer think.
That’s the real problem – sure it’s embarrassing not to tip. I’d be embarrassed even if I had poor service, not offering a tip. I pledge to stop that behavior of mine here and now, and it will be much easier for me to tip those truly deserving of one – since they are so rare.
And, Purps, EVERYBODY loves pork-flavoured brocolli.
NFG…not trying to stir up shit but how is fucking a dog useful?
and no…not everybody loves pork-flavoured broccoli. I can see why you would believe this to be true as the more I puff the better things seem to taste…
I have traveled all over Asia – no tipping. I traveled through Russia – no tipping. I traveled through Finland and Sweden – no tipping. What’s with North America???
Real Chick: it’s Kay. Doesn’t have to make sense 🙂
And the pork-flavoured brocolli is from The Boondocks in the episode titled “The Itis”.
Douche.
Damn Russians….
If you need tips to survive, maybe you should get a better job.
Fuck you Sebastien.
In Ontario, Sebastard, servers can be paid LESS THAN minimum wage because the expectation of tips brings their earnings up to the min wage.
I have family who work in the restaurant industry (upscale restaurant company and they do QUITE well — well enough to buy a fancy house in a great neighbourhood in the t-dot so suck it, ‘tard) and they have informed me that their servers can be legally paid under min wage.
Funk, dude, we gotta blaze sometime, bro. Maybe crack a couple 40s of el malto liquo too.
We could invite sebastian to join us but he’ll do something queer like ask for a martini glass for his Colt 45.
The difference between NA and most of those other countries where tipping is not a custom is that servers are paid a living wage there, where they are not here. My cousin in Australia made between $17-20 per hour serving, but didn’t receive tips – except from the occasionally Westerner who tipped anyway.
If servers here were making anywhere close to that per hour tipping would be unnecessary, but as it stands most servers (at least the ones that keep their jobs and work a decent restaurants) work their asses off. If it weren’t for the tips the only service we could even hope to get would be terrible, as no one with the the ability to choose would sign-up for such a thankless job if they got nothing in return. Even if they are receiving minimum wage, so what? Minimum wage is not a living wage for a single person, let alone someone with a child or a family. Tips are what make such jobs possible. As a former server, chef, and frequent restaurant goer I really appreciate a well executed dining experience, and I will gladly pay to enjoy one. Those who can’t or won’t should learn to cook, or if nothing else get used to hungry man.
Thanks NFG…I figured when the comment is aimed at Kay it doesn’t really matter. Does the term “fucking the dog” mean waste of time?
pork flavored broccoli is definitely better than broccoli flavored pork….
that’s about all I can say to promote it though.
I dunno, RC, just felt like telling Kay to go fuck a dog 🙂
