DEAR HALIFAX MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT,

PLEASE TAKE YOUR PARKING BAN AND SHOVE IT UP YOUR ASS. ALONG WITH ALL YOUR OTHER DIM-WIT RULES AND SORRY ATTEMPTS AT CITY IMPROVEMENT… OH…AND YOU MIGHT AS WELL PUT YOUR BAGPIPES UP THERE TOO.

This full-time Parking Ban is absolutely outrageous in this time of economic turmoil. This city is so ass-backwards with the way it runs its day to day operations and with the way it treats its citizens. $50 for parking on the street every night??!! Are you f*cking kidding me. Where are people supposed to put their cars? Up their asses? Halifax is a joke, always has been, and always will be with moves like this.

Again….WHERE ARE PEOPLE SUPPOSED TO PARK? The city’s public transit system is a joke compared to most other large cities and it forces people to own cars because without a car you can’t do anything in this city. Then you ticket hardworking people $50!!! $50! SERIOUSLY! For parking on the street even when it isn’t snowing! ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE.

$50 if you don’t move your car when there is a snowstorm fine…and then tow it and charge the person another $200 for not moving it… that is fair, but $50 when its 10 degrees outside just because you want to be pricks about the whole thing… well that is just… ya, A PRICK MOVE.

I will be moving away from Halifax as soon as possible. This parking ban bullsh*t is the last straw for me. Jobs for young professionals are scarce, the city does nothing to promote growth or progress. No tall buildings, no this, no that, no parking, no subway or skytrain system, no music outside, unfair tuition rates, and on and on. Halifax will be left to die with its old, feeble, pathetic population because that will be all that is left in a few years. I can guarantee you that almost all the young, vibrant people will have moved to cities where living is the priority instead of ridiculous rules, half-wit infrastructure planning, and a clue-less municipal government. And then they wonder why the downtown is dying.

By the time all you people who run this city get your heads out of your asses we will all be gone. No Parking on the street ALL WINTER!!?? NO PROBLEM, SEE YOU LATER, I’M MOVING TO MONTREAL THANKS, OR EUROPE, OR NEW YORK, OR ANYWHERE THAT PUTS PEOPLE FIRST. BECAUSE HALIFAX OBVIOUSLY DOESN’T.

Young, Strong, and Moving On.

  1. Can we get a tag about these stupid bitches so I don’t have to waste my time reading the first paragraph to figure out what these idiots are complaining about?

There’s a parking ban every year so why don’t you just make your arrangements ahead of time? I managed to do it before I had my own space and so does everyone else.

  2. When looking for an apartment I specifically looked for one with parking. It’s not that hard. I don’t even have to pay extra and my parking is underground.

  3. My question is: what economic turmoil? We really haven’t been hit by the current recession. If you’re moving, good luck, especially to the larger city centres, who have all been hit by the current economic situation (young people, especially young professionals are the first to lose their job) Oh, and don’t move to Montreal or Toronto, they either have similar restrictions in place, and if they don’t catch your car, they bury it in snow. Then you don’t have a car until the bank melts. Good luck, asshole.

  4. It’s simple, if you own a car.. rent an apartment with parking. Why would you rent a place, knowing that you are going to have this issue when winter comes? It’s not a new thing. It drives me nuts when my freshly plowed street is blocked by a mound of snow that the plower couldn’t remove because of cars on the street. I do get some satisfaction, though, from seeing their car surrounded by a 2 foot wall of snow.

  5. Cry me a fucking river. Thsi was advertised EXTENSIVELY and anyone who claims to have not heard about it much have been in a coma. People say they should have been given a warning first. Then they would have claimed they should have been given TWO warnings. It is what it is. Get over it.

  6. I agree with jennier. The parking ban is in affect EVERY year and has been for as long as I can remember. Although, I was under the impression that it was only before and after a snowstorm, within a certain timeframe

  7. this makes two… I wonder how many it needs before it gets a topic.
surely it will exceed that number in less than a week…
Please be proactive and tag it Andy

  8. Who pissed in your Cornflakes?

Also, MT doesn’t force you to have a car. I don’t and I use MT every day and don’t have a single damn problem.

Fuck off to the other cities you listed. Have fun with their higher crime rates, busy traffic and even higher taxes in Europe.

  9. To the ASSHOLE that posted this piece of CRAP..

    “““`go fuck yourself““

If you don’t like it here move, they have a large area in Ont. for idiots like you, its called Toronto.

  10. The parking ban was only during days with snow last year (or maybe it was the year before, I can’t remember) as a trial run to give the citizens a break. Problem is, NOBODY MOVED THEIR CAR WHEN IT SNOWED so now those fuckers ruined it for everyone else and it’s a perma-ban. If people abided by the “only when it snows” ban it wouldn’t be an issue. Too bad, so sad. Move your car.

  11. “Fuck off to the other cities you listed. Have fun with their higher crime rates, busy traffic and even higher taxes in Europe.”

I dunno know about europe but none of the Canadian cities that they mentioned have nearly the crime rate of halifax

  12. I fully support this parking ban. YOU chose to live where you are. YOU chose to buy a car. YOU should have known you don’t have a driveway. Stupid twats. Ticket them all!

  13. Did anyone catch the news yesterday with the lady from the HRM talking about the increase in the ticket price from 25 to 50 dollars? (100% increase) She said the price was in effect last year, as the province sets the ticket prices, but because the HRM advertised it as $25.00, they decided to go ahead and keep that price, and gave the people a ‘break’. What bugs me, is if HRM has the power to “give people breaks” and only charge $25.00 when it is supposed to be $50, why not do that every year?

  14. Move to France…THat’s where I’d be going if I was young !
    Also it isn’t simple !
I live in the country, & work sometimes at various venues in the city. My full size truck will not fit in the parkades. So when we’re at the Metro Centre tearing out a show, when 1am comes by I’m going to get a ticket, or at least be in violation snow or no snow ! ! !
I’ll only be another hour +/- or so normally …except, I’m going to use this stupid by-law as a way to leave work early, so I don’t get a ticket ! I don’t want to do that, I’m going to be FORCED TO DO THAT ! I DON”T MAKE $50.00 an hour, so I’m not going to continue working an extra hour & go into the HOLE for a completely stupid assinine, arbitrarily unfair BLANKET PARKING BAN !

  15. Cool, The Coast now has a new tag for this Bitch, and apparently we’ll all be getting a free bowl of cereal courtesy of HRM during this so-called “Winter Parking Bran.” I’ll be waiting for Tim Bousquet’s next article or Tweet on this one.

  16. OP: you live in Hfx. The parking ban has been in effect every year for decades, at least (at least it was in effect in the mid 80s when I was a wee one), so it’s not like it’s something new. Parking the car is YOUR responsibility, not the city’s, and if that means you have to pay, well that’s all part of the costs of owning a car and living in Hfx. If you didn’t figure out what to do with your car during the winter when you acquired the car, then that’s YOUR problem. It’s not HRM’s responsibility to provide parking for your vehicle.

Suck it up, OP. The parking ban happens every year. You had at least 6 months [this year] to prepare.

  17. Sure, just because the rule was in effect for years before this, we should live with it? The parking ban is a tax grab, and many other cities have brainstormed ways of allowing at least some street parking. It’s unfortunately not as easy as just “finding an apartment with parking.” Halifax has little parking at the best of times, and there’s no reason why new ideas shouldn’t be explored. Doesn’t Montreal alternate sides of the street that you can park on?

  18. Gee, too bad. If you lived in Kingswood you would have a big driveway, so you wouldn’t have to park on the street.

  19. Again, ellejay: it’s not HRM’s responsibility to ensure everyone has a place to park their cars. It’s the individual owners who should be thinking about this when they purchase a vehicle.

See, most people bitching about the lack of space to park seem to be living within the more urban areas of HRM — all of which are serviced by metro transit. If this is so, you can always use the bus instead of buying a car. A car isn’t the necessity everyone thinks it is when perfectly good public transit is available. If you can’t find a place to park your car or you can’t afford a spot to park during the winter, then maybe you should re think your decision to own a car in the first place.

  20. “”If this is so, (you live in the urban core) you can always use the bus instead of buying a car…”

And then enjoy your life living entirely within a few hectares of urban jungle…now you have a great excuse not to go anywhere!

Let me know how that “no car” works out for you once your “done growed up’

“”A car isn’t the necessity everyone thinks it is when perfectly good public transit is available”‘

Agreed. And if you lived in NYC or London, you might consider this.

  21. Its not like people “need” a car living in Halifax. Almost anything you need is within walking distance and the transit system is not disfunctional. Besides, a bus pass is a lot cheaper than filling up the tank every week.

  22. sucks to be you, I live on a street that is never bothered by ticketers for winter parking ban during a fine day, but if its snowing out, be prepared to find another parking spot for the night, or be prepared for a $50-$100 obstruction of snow removal fine in your windshield. i’ve seen it several times.

  23. also,if you want a place to park your car long term, then call the hrm cops.they will oblige you by having it towed to the impound yard, and then you have no parking problem, anymore.

  24. PK is right here, most places on the peninsula get decent bus service so put the car somewhere for the winter and get to riding. A pass is just $20 a month more than the ticket you’ve just received. Owning a car can be great, but it comes with costs and responsibilities you need to be ready for.

  25. you could do what a guy last year did… park at the hospital and leave it there.
Man, I would HATE to see the bill he had at the end, unless he happened to drive there himself and ended up dying. Same truck in the same spot every day for 3 months…..
    know how I know?
there was a pink mitten on the hood. never moved.
Saw the parking officer there at the 3 month period… I think they likely towed it away.
just as well, the muffler was about to fall off the truck anyways.

  26. Everyone (except me) is on here about people who live in Halifax, with car parking problems…am I the only person who posts here who lives in the country & who works late at night & is affected because I often don’t finish work until 2am +/- a half hour ?
I have no choice but to be on the road, or I have to park down on the waterfront…if I can find a spot closer that the Keiths Brewery… That spot over by the cop station, where the old church was, fills up quick when there’s a large crowd at the Metro Centre. I wonder if a working pass with time/date & event would work to give us the half hour to hour we need to finish a job ?!?

  27. Iehova: go live in a rural area and see how much more you appreciate metro transit when you come back.

I know I sure did. I lived in buttfuck, ns for 12 years and if you didn’t have a car you weren’t going nowhere! Sure MT isn’t the MOST efficient EVER, but at least it gets you from point A to point B in one piece (generally speaking).

  28. More, have you tried explaining your situation to the city? There are exemptions for doctors, delivery trucks, firefighters etc…maybe you could make a case for an exemption too since you aren’t looking to park overnight. You’ll have a stronger case if you can find others in your situation too.

  29. I lived in Tantallon for my last 3 years of high school and one of University. At that time, the bus only ran twice in the morning andf twice in the afternoon, and none of those limited times did me any good.

The fact that the most used route (1?) only runs every 10-15 minutes at its most frequent, is appalling. Let’s not even get started about Sunday service.

  30. “”Its not like people “need” a car living in Halifax. “‘

No, no-one “needs’ a car to stay alive. Just food, shelter, sanitation…

What a grand life though, innit? Bumming rides to Lawrencetown, hitch-hiking up to the valley, “can I come, can I!” everytime your friends want to go to Lunenburg for the day, wrestling your golfclubs/surfboard/windsurfer on the bus?

    It’ll get old, believe me
