OP: Perhaps your neighbour knew someone hacked into their computer but couldn’t prove exactly who it was, so kept it to themselves.
They should have changed the password

In answer to the post: Yes. Yes you should apologize. Technically, you committed ‘theft’.
And also yes, if it had mattered to the neighbor that much, they should have changed the password or approached you. But obviously, it didn’t rank very high on the care-o-metre.
They didn’t know they had been hacked.
It says “you caught on quickly…”. That would indicate they either discovered it on their own or the original poster came clean.
Too bad the post doesn’t really have much on the line of details.
