Hey, what’s up with the drinking water in the north end? For the last week or so it has been developing a smell that is making it harder to drink. The Water Commission said only that “there was a problem in the north end” (after they tried to suggest it was just a problem with our hot water heater) but offered no other details. We live on Maynard Street. Anyone else getting the funk on tap? Anyone have any more info as to what is going on? —WaterTF?

  1. Yeah, it’s not supposed to be dangerous.. It’s nasty though. I had to buy some big jugs of water.

  2. It’s “geosmin” – from wikipedia: Geosmin is produced by several classes of microbes, including cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and actinobacteria (especially Streptomyces), and released when these microbes die.

    Apparently harmless – see: http://www.halifax.ca/hrwc/

  3. I always laugh at people who wait in line to use the filtered water at work for their tea kettle when the sink is right there.

tip (for clear cubes and the ‘novelty’ ice trays, you boil the water first)
